A territory between Valsugana and Lagorai
The Valle dei Mocheni, known as Bersntol in Mòcheno, is a side valley of the Valsugana that opens east of Pergine Valsugana, in the province of Trento. Crossed by the Fersina stream, it gradually rises from cultivated valley floors to pastures and forests bordering the Lagorai mountain range, on the border with Val di Fiemme and Val di Cembra. The territory includes the municipalities of Fierozzo, Frassilongo, and Palù del Fersina, the historical heart of the Mòcheno linguistic island, with Sant'Orsola Terme marking its entrance from the Pergine side. The valley is reachable by car in a few minutes from the main town of Pergine, while remaining an secluded and human-scale territory.
History and identity: the Mòcheno linguistic island
La particularidad del valle es la lengua mochena (Bersntoler Sprache), un idioma de origen germánico bávaro hablado todavía hoy por parte de la población local, fruto de la colonización medieval de mineros y leñadores llegados de los valles tiroleses y bávaros para explotar los yacimientos mineros de la zona. Durante siglos, la extracción de plata y otros minerales ha representado un recurso fundamental para la economía local, dejando galerías y testimonios aún visibles en el territorio. El Istituto Culturale Mòcheno-Bersntoler Kulturinstitut, con sede en el Filzerhof de Fierozzo, promueve desde hace años la tutela de la lengua, las tradiciones y la memoria histórica de esta pequeña comunidad de minoría.
Paisaje y naturaleza entre bosques y la Gran Guerra
El paisaje del Valle dei Mocheni alterna prados de siega y masías dispersas en la parte baja con densos bosques de abeto y alerce que suben hacia los pastos de alta cota, hasta las crestas rocosas del Lagorai, uno de los grupos montañosos menos antropizados del Trentino. El torrente Fersina marca el fondo del valle con pequeñas cascadas y gargantas, mientras que los senderos que se elevan hacia el Passo del Redebus ofrecen amplias vistas panorámicas sobre las Dolomitas de Fiemme y la Valsugana. Numerosos senderos de excursión también recorren las trincheras y los caminos de la Primera Guerra Mundial, cuando el valle se encontró a lo largo de la línea del frente entre el Imperio Austro-Húngaro y el Reino de Italia.
Pueblos y lugares para ver
Fierozzo (Vlarotz), with the hamlets of San Francesco and Roveda, is home to the Filzerhof, seat of the Mòcheno Cultural Institute with museum routes dedicated to the Mòcheno language and civilization. Frassilongo (Garait) preserves the traditional architecture of the typical wooden and stone farmhouses of the valley. Palù del Fersina (Palae en Bersntol), the highest and smallest municipality, is famous for the evocative Sentiero dei Sospiri (Path of Sighs) with its themed wood carvings, as well as preserving evidence of ancient mining activities. Sant'Orsola Terme, at the entrance to the valley, is a good starting point for exploring the area and reaching the Panarotta ski and hiking areas.
Food and local traditions
The cuisine of the Mòcheni Valley reflects its peasant and Germanic roots: mountain cheeses, speck, traditional cured meats, mountain potatoes, and small berries such as blueberries and raspberries accompany typical dishes like canederli (dumplings) and specialties based on flour and potatoes passed down through Mòcheni families. Mountain honey, artisanal spirits, and garden produce complete a simple and genuine table. Folk traditions, traditional costumes, and festivals linked to the agricultural calendar and the memory of the Mòcheni community remain a distinctive feature, kept alive thanks to the work of local cultural associations and the Mòcheno Cultural Institute.
