Geography and territory
The Val d'Orcia extends across the southern part of the province of Siena, along the course of the Orcia River, between the Crete Senesi to the north and the Monte Amiata massif to the south. The district includes the municipal territories of Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia, Castiglione d'Orcia, Radicofani, and part of Montalcino, as well as hamlets like Bagno Vignoni and Rocca d'Orcia. The landscape alternates between clay hills shaped by erosion, gullies, and badlands, with rows of cypress trees, olive groves, and fields cultivated with wheat, in an agrarian mosaic that has made the area world-famous for its scenic beauty.
History and identity
Crocevia della via Francigena, la Val d'Orcia fu terra di transito per pellegrini, mercanti ed eserciti diretti a Roma, e conserva ancora pievi, ospitali e torri di avvistamento lungo l'antico tracciato. Nel XV secolo papa Pio II, al secolo Enea Silvio Piccolomini, nato a Corsignano, trasformò il proprio borgo natale nella città ideale rinascimentale di Pienza, affidando il progetto all'architetto Bernardo Rossellino. Montalcino e Radicofani, con le loro fortezze, testimoniano invece il ruolo strategico e militare dell'area nelle contese tra Siena, Firenze e lo Stato della Chiesa. Nel 2004 l'UNESCO ha riconosciuto la Val d'Orcia Patrimonio dell'Umanità.
Paesaggio e natura
Il paesaggio della Val d'Orcia è uno dei più fotografati e dipinti d'Italia: colline dolci coperte di grano che cambiano colore con le stagioni, cipressi solitari o in filari lungo le strade bianche, oliveti terrazzati e boschi di querce verso il Monte Amiata. Le formazioni argillose delle crete creano calanchi e biancane dal profilo quasi lunare, mentre il fiume Orcia scorre placido tra i campi. A Bagno Vignoni le acque termali sgorgano naturalmente da secoli, alimentando un'antica vasca al centro del paese. Il territorio è tutelato come sito UNESCO anche per il suo valore paesaggistico, oltre che storico e culturale.
Borghi e luoghi da vedere
Pienza, with its Piazza Pio II, the Cathedral, and Palazzo Piccolomini, is the most complete example of Renaissance urban planning in the area. San Quirico d'Orcia preserves the Romanesque Collegiata and the Italian-style gardens of the Horti Leonini. Castiglione d'Orcia dominates the valley with the Rocca a Tentennano, while nearby Bagno Vignoni is famous for its thermal water square, the ancient pool also mentioned by Dante. Radicofani is distinguished by its imposing medieval fortress linked to the legend of the brigand Ghino di Tacco. Montalcino, with its 14th-century Fortress, is the historical and productive center linked to the famous Brunello wine.
Food and traditions
The Val d'Orcia is a land of gastronomic excellence: Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino, DOCG and DOC wines, are among the most renowned Italian reds in the world, produced from the Sangiovese Grosso grape variety. In Pienza, the famous Pecorino di Pienza is produced, a sheep's milk cheese aged in various ways, often under walnut leaves or ash. Among the typical dishes, pici stand out, fresh handmade pasta, seasoned with ragù or aglione. There is also extra virgin olive oil, honey, saffron, and sheep farming products, the basis of a peasant tradition still practiced in the farms of the territory.
