Geografie und Lage der Region
Die Region Schlern und Seiser Alm liegt in Südtirol, in der Autonomen Provinz Bozen, am nordwestlichen Hang des Dolomitengesteins Schlern-Rosengarten. Sie umfasst die Gemeinden Kastelruth und Völs am Schlern sowie den Ort Seis am Schlern und erstreckt sich von den Tälern auf etwa 900 Metern bis zum Gipfel des Schlern auf etwa 2.450 Metern. Im Osten grenzt sie an das Grödnertal und im Süden an das Eggental, und nimmt eine Hochebene zwischen den Tälern Eisack und Etsch ein, die als landschaftlicher Bezugspunkt für die gesamte Dolomitenregion dient.
Geschichte und Identität des Gebiets
Lo Sciliar è tra le prime montagne delle Dolomiti a essere state raccontate e dipinte, e già nell'Ottocento attirava naturalisti e alpinisti di lingua tedesca, contribuendo a fare di quest'area una delle culle del turismo dolomitico. La cultura sudtirolese di lingua tedesca convive qui con un forte legame alla tradizione contadina di montagna: i masi sparsi, i pascoli d'alta quota e le processioni religiose scandiscono ancora oggi il calendario locale. Castelrotto, con il suo caratteristico campanile barocco e le case affrescate, conserva l'aspetto di borgo storico tirolese, mentre attorno allo Sciliar sopravvivono leggende popolari legate alle streghe, radicate nel folklore alpino della zona.
Paesaggio e natura
L'Alpe di Siusi è il più grande altopiano alpino d'Europa, un mare di prati verdi punteggiati da baite in legno e piccole chiese, con lo sfondo delle guglie del Catinaccio e del Sassolungo. L'intera zona ricade in gran parte nel Parco Naturale Sciliar-Catinaccio, istituito a tutela delle pareti rocciose, dei boschi di conifere e dei pascoli d'altitudine, ed è parte del sito Dolomiti riconosciuto Patrimonio Mondiale dell'Umanità UNESCO. Il massiccio dello Sciliar, con le sue pareti verticali e le celebri torri rocciose, domina il paesaggio ed è visibile da gran parte della Val d'Isarco e della conca di Bolzano, rendendolo uno dei profili montani più riconoscibili delle Dolomiti.
Borghi e luoghi da vedere
Castelrotto is the main village of the area, known for its central square, bell tower, and the painted facades of the Tyrolean houses. Fiè allo Sciliar, at the foot of the massif, is a starting point for hikes and for the historic Sciliar cable car. Siusi allo Sciliar, a hamlet of Castelrotto, connects the village to the plateau via the cable car to the Alpe di Siusi, where the small settlement of Compatsch is the main landmark of the plateau, with paths radiating towards the mountain huts and panoramic viewpoints of the Catinaccio. In the surroundings, there are also historic mountain pastures and small alpine churches scattered among the meadows, classic stops for walks on the plateau.
Food and traditions
The cuisine of the area combines South Tyrolean peasant flavors and mountain pasture products: speck, alpine cheeses, canederli (dumplings), and rye-based dishes accompany the menus of mountain huts and farmhouses that offer typical meals. The mountain pastures of the Alpe di Siusi produce butter and cheeses processed according to tradition during the summer grazing season, while in the farmhouses, there are still ovens for rye bread dried according to Tyrolean custom. Among the events that mark the year is the traditional transhumance, with the ascent and descent of livestock from high-altitude pastures, an identity moment for the communities of Castelrotto and Fiè allo Sciliar linked to the mountain agricultural cycle.
