Volano in the upper Vallagarina, on the left bank of the Adige
Volano is located in the upper Vallagarina, the valley carved by the Adige River between Trento and Rovereto, a few kilometers north of the Rovereto center, on the left bank of the river. The municipal territory borders Calliano, Nomi, Pomarolo, and Rovereto itself, in a position that places it at the center of one of the most densely cultivated vineyard areas in the entire valley. The town stands at the foot of Monte Finonchio, the elevation that closes Rovereto's horizon to the east, in a basin once marked by the changing course of the Adige: until a few centuries ago, before the major regulation works of the nineteenth century, the river drew bends that lapped the inhabited area, leaving traces still legible in the landscape and local toponymy. This transit position along the axis connecting Trento to Garda and the Veronese plain has made Volano, over the centuries, a reference point for traffic and pilgrimages that crossed Vallagarina.
The Hermitage of Santa Cecilia on Cengio Rosso
The most evocative place in Volano is the Eremo di Santa Cecilia, a small sanctuary nestled in a ledge of the rock face known as Cengio Rosso, which rises sheer above the valley north of the inhabited area. The first certain news of a chapel at this point dates back to 1611, but popular tradition links the place to much older devotions, related to the protection of travelers and local farmers. Over the centuries, the small chapel was enlarged until it took on the appearance of a real small church, reachable only through a path that climbs along the rock, offering spectacular views of the upper Vallagarina, the vineyards below, and the foothills of Monte Finonchio. Every year, on August 5th, the hermitage becomes the destination of a pilgrimage deeply felt by the local community, who climb to the ledge for the saint's feast, keeping alive a tradition that unites popular faith and landscape in a single gesture.
Marzemino and the vineyards of Volano, City of Wine
Volano has been recognized as a City of Wine since 2000, a title that reflects the wine-growing vocation of a territory divided into three distinct production areas. In the Ziresi area, Marzemino matures, the indigenous red grape variety that is among the enological symbols of Vallagarina, capable of producing fragrant wines of good structure, cultivated on terraces and alluvial fans well exposed to the sun. In the Praolini area, white grapes such as Chardonnay and Traminer prevail, while towards the Adige river, on the border with Nomi and Calliano, the Tomi del Adès area extends. The numerous wineries in the town, many family-run, offer tastings and visits among the rows, and every year the Magnalonga, a food and wine walk that starts from the Legat park in Volano and crosses the vineyards towards Castel Beseno, attracts walkers and wine enthusiasts from all over Vallagarina, offering a different way to discover the agricultural landscape of the town.
The Taio Biotope: the marsh between the vineyards
A pochi passi dall'abitato, tra i comuni di Volano e Nomi, si estende il Biotopo Taio, un'area naturale protetta istituita nel 1989 che occupa circa quattro ettari in mezzo ai vigneti della Vallagarina. Si tratta di una zona umida relitta, ultima testimonianza delle antiche anse dell'Adige che un tempo caratterizzavano il fondovalle, oggi conservata come ambiente palustre con specchi d'acqua quasi ferma, canali, canneti e lembi di bosco igrofilo dominato dall'ontano nero. La vegetazione ospita anche iris d'acqua, salici, noccioli e biancospini, mentre la fauna comprende tuffetti, aironi, anatre, numerosi passeriformi e rapaci, oltre a mammiferi come volpi, ricci e diversi chirotteri, e ad anfibi e rettili legati all'ambiente acquatico. Percorso da un breve sentiero didattico, il biotopo rappresenta un contrappunto naturalistico al paesaggio ordinato dei filari, e ricorda come il fiume abbia plasmato per secoli la fisionomia di questo tratto di Vallagarina.
Storia, chiese e tradizioni di Volano
La storia di Volano affonda le radici nell'alto medioevo: il nome del paese compare già nella Historia Langobardorum di Paolo Diacono, scritta intorno al 590 d.C., a testimonianza di un insediamento antico lungo la direttrice dell'Adige. Il comune, nella sua forma amministrativa attuale, fu istituito nell'ottobre del 1920, ma il tessuto storico del paese è ben più stratificato, come mostra la chiesa di San Rocco, di origine trecentesca e più volte rimaneggiata, che conserva un pregevole ciclo di affreschi votivi. Accanto ad essa sorge la parrocchiale della Purificazione di Maria, cuore religioso della comunità. Le tradizioni locali si esprimono ancora oggi nel carnevale storico, con la sua sfilata caratteristica, e negli appuntamenti enogastronomici legati al vino, mentre i sentieri che salgono verso il Monte Finonchio e collegano Volano alle vicine mete escursionistiche di Folgaria e Serrada offrono, in ogni stagione, un modo attivo di conoscere questo angolo della Vallagarina.
