Ville di Fiemme in Val di Fiemme: three villages in one municipality
Ville di Fiemme is a Trentino municipality born on January 1, 2020, from the merger of the municipalities of Carano, Daiano, and Varena, which today constitute its main hamlets along with Cela, Solaiolo, Aguai, Calvello, and the locality of Veronza. The territory, about 46 square kilometers, occupies the sunny side of Val di Fiemme, the valley carved by the Avisio stream that separates the Lagorai group from the Trentino Dolomites, between Cavalese and Tesero. The various villages are arranged on morainic terraces at altitudes between one thousand and twelve hundred meters, with Daiano, the seat of the municipality, being among the highest inhabited centers in the valley. This favorable exposure, combined with the open view of the surrounding mountain ranges, has always made the territory suitable for both permanent settlement and agricultural and pastoral exploitation, characteristics that the three ancient municipalities already shared before the administrative unification and which today continue to define the identity of the new municipality of Ville di Fiemme.

From the terraces on which Carano, Daiano, and Varena stand, the view stretches over a wide fan of peaks surrounding Val di Fiemme: to the north, the Dolomite walls of Latemar stand out, the massif that marks the border with the province of Bolzano, while to the south, the gentler but imposing ridges of Lagorai develop, and further away, the spires of the Pale di San Martino. The municipal territory does not directly include the Latemar ski resorts, which are located in the neighboring municipality of Tesero, but from Ville di Fiemme, one enjoys one of the most suggestive observation points on the entire massif, thanks to the altitude and the exposure of the villages. Paths and scenic roads connecting the hamlets offer photographic views of the Dolomites in every season, from spring blooms to the autumn colors of the larches, up to the snow-covered walls in winter, making the municipality a quiet base for those who wish to admire the Dolomites of Fiemme without giving up the tranquility of a still strongly rural landscape.
Pastures, Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, and traditions
Like the rest of the valley, the territory of Ville di Fiemme is also part of the area of competence of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, the ancient institution entrusted since the Middle Ages with the collective management of the woods and pastures of the entire Val di Fiemme, one of the longest-lasting models of community ownership in Europe. Around the inhabited centers, mountain huts and hay meadows still extend today, testifying to an agro-pastoral culture that has never been completely abandoned. This tradition is complemented by customs specific to individual hamlets: in Carano, the Banderal is passed down, an ancient ceremony for bachelors celebrated every four years on the last day of Carnival; in Varena, since 1989, a large nativity scene set up in the village occupies about seven hundred meters of path and two thousand five hundred square meters of scenery; in Daiano, Casa Begna preserves ethnographic evidence of peasant life, while a small house museum recalls the painter-priest Antonio Longo, born in the village in 1742.
Skiing, nature, and Lavazè Pass
Varena, the highest hamlet and closest to the mountains, is located at the foot of Corno Nero, near the Lavazè Pass, a plateau that marks the border with Alto Adige and is a destination in both summer and winter. On the pass, a network of over eighty kilometers of cross-country and alpine ski slopes has been developed, renovated for the 2013 Nordic Ski World Championships in Val di Fiemme, which brought the valley to international prominence. In summer, the same plateau, with its spruce and larch woods and high-altitude pastures, transforms into a starting point for excursions towards Lagorai or for simple high-altitude walks suitable for families. Even at lower altitudes, between Carano and Daiano, the network of paths and country lanes that cross woods, apple orchards, and meadows allows you to move on foot or by bicycle between the hamlets, in a landscape still marked by work in the fields and the rhythm of the seasons.
History, churches, and experiences to live
The origins of the settlements in Ville di Fiemme are ancient: Carano, whose name is said to derive from the Latin Cadranum, has roots dating back to Roman times and has been documented since 1188, while Varena is among the oldest settlements in the valley, rebuilt after a severe fire destroyed it in 1765. The three main churches house a remarkable artistic heritage: the church of San Nicolò in Carano, built in the 12th century and restored several times; the church of San Tommaso in Daiano, dating back to 1193; and the church of Saints Peter and Paul in Varena, consecrated in the same year and embellished with medieval frescoes and works by Valentino Rovisi, a pupil of Tiepolo, and the so-called Maestro di Lisignago. Completing the historical picture are Castel Croda, a 16th-century fortified residence, and the Colonia Pavese of 1934, a building that recalls the season of climatic stays in the valley. Visiting Ville di Fiemme today means alternating visits to churches and small hamlet museums with walks among the farmsteads, in a municipality that unites three distinct identities into a single mountain narrative.
