A scattered municipality in the heart of the Val di Non
Ville d'Anaunia is born from the union of Tuenno, Nanno, and Tassullo, three villages that have dotted the slopes of the Val di Non for centuries, the valley that in Roman antiquity was called Anaunia and which gave its name to the new municipality. Each of the three villages retains its own identity: Tuenno opens towards the Lago di Tovel and the Adamello-Brenta Park, Tassullo houses the famous Castel Valer, while Nanno overlooks a panoramic hill with a view of the valley. The choice to unite the three centers into a single scattered municipality has made it possible to enhance a common heritage of nature, history, and agriculture together, while keeping the peculiarities of each inhabited nucleus alive. Walking through the streets of these villages means crossing typical rural architecture of the Val di Non, ancient churches, and small squares, in a context that remains authentic and linked to the rhythms of the mountains and the countryside.
The apple orchards and the Melinda DOP apple
The landscape of Ville d'Anaunia is largely shaped by apple orchards, which cover the valley floors and climb the slopes to considerable altitudes. The Val di Non is indeed the homeland of the Melinda apple, a PDO product that represents one of Trentino's best-known agricultural excellences, cultivated by generations of farming families united in cooperatives. In spring, the orchards transform into an explosion of white and pink blossoms that attract visitors and photography enthusiasts, while in autumn, the harvest dictates the rhythm of life in the villages. Traveling the roads between Tuenno, Nanno, and Tassullo, one encounters orderly rows, traditional drying sheds, and small shops where the valley's symbolic fruit can be purchased directly. Lake Tovel and the phenomenon of the red lake
Nestled among coniferous forests at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites, Lake Tovel is the most famous destination in the Ville d'Anaunia area, reachable from the hamlet of Tuenno. Its clear waters, surrounded by a natural amphitheater of rocks and forests, are linked to a phenomenon that for decades made the lake famous throughout Italy: the summer reddening of the waters, once known as the "red lake," which tinted part of the basin with red and vermilion hues. The phenomenon, no longer observable today with the same intensity as in the past, has fueled popular legends and naturalistic studies, contributing to making Lake Tovel a symbol of the Val di Non. Even today, the lake is a destination for walks and excursions, appreciated for the tranquility of its perimeter paths, its panoramic viewpoints, and the opportunity to admire one of the most evocative lake landscapes in Trentino, immersed in the protected nature of the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park.
The castles: Castel Valer and Castel Nanno
La storia di Ville d'Anaunia è raccontata anche dai suoi castelli, testimonianze del ruolo difensivo e signorile che questa parte della Val di Non ha rivestito nel corso dei secoli. A Tassullo sorge Castel Valer, uno dei manieri più affascinanti della valle, riconoscibile per la sua torre e per l'architettura che unisce elementi fortificati a spazi residenziali più raffinati, sviluppatisi nei secoli come dimora delle famiglie nobili che ne furono proprietarie. Non lontano, sul territorio di Nanno, si trovano i resti di Castel Nanno, ulteriore testimonianza del sistema di fortificazioni che un tempo presidiava i punti strategici della valle, a controllo delle vie di comunicazione e dei possedimenti agricoli. Questi manieri, insieme alle chiese storiche disseminate nei tre borghi, compongono un itinerario di storia locale che permette di comprendere come la Val di Non sia stata per secoli terra di confine e di potere, contesa tra famiglie nobiliari e principati vescovili, prima di diventare la valle agricola e turistica che è oggi.
Il Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta e le escursioni
Buona parte del territorio montano di Ville d'Anaunia rientra nel Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta, la più estesa area protetta del Trentino, che comprende le Dolomiti di Brenta e il massiccio dell'Adamello-Presanella. Dalle frazioni del comune partono sentieri che conducono verso il Lago di Tovel, verso le malghe d'alpeggio e verso quote più elevate, tra boschi di abete rosso, larice e pascoli alpini che ospitano una fauna ricca, incluso l'orso bruno, simbolo della conservazione naturalistica del parco. Le escursioni possono essere semplici passeggiate ad anello attorno al lago, adatte anche alle famiglie, oppure percorsi più impegnativi verso i rifugi e le vette dolomitiche. In ogni stagione il parco offre scenari diversi: le fioriture primaverili, il verde intenso dell'estate, i colori dell'autunno che si mescolano a quelli dei meleti a valle, e la quiete innevata dell'inverno. Per chi ama la montagna, Ville d'Anaunia rappresenta quindi una base ideale da cui esplorare uno degli ambienti naturali più preziosi delle Alpi italiane.
