Val di Vizze (in German Pfitsch) is a scattered municipality in the Upper Isarco Valley, in the province of Bolzano, which extends for over thirty kilometers northeast of Vipiteno to the border with Austria. The municipal territory, among the most extensive in South Tyrol, includes the capital Prati (Wiesen), the municipal seat, and numerous hamlets scattered along the valley floor and on the slopes, including Caminata (Kematen), San Giacomo (St. Jakob), and Novale (Ried). The valley, carved by the Rio di Vizze which flows into the Isarco near Vipiteno, narrows progressively as one climbs towards the Zillertal Alps, culminating at the Passo di Vizze (Pfitscherjoch, 2,246 m), a historic gateway to Austrian Tyrol. Populated by about three thousand inhabitants, mostly German-speaking, with an Italian minority concentrated mainly in Prati, Val di Vizze preserves an economy linked to alpine pastoralism and hiking tourism, among mountain huts, woods, and high-altitude pastures dominated by the Gran Pilastro, the highest peak in the area. It is a glacial side valley in the truest sense of the word, shaped over millennia by the ice of the Zillertal Alps, today a destination for summer walks and winter cross-country skiing.

Val di Vizze above Vipiteno

Val di Vizze opens northeast of Vipiteno, in the Upper Isarco Valley, as a long side valley that rises towards the Austrian border for over thirty kilometers. The municipality, one of the largest in Trentino-Alto Adige in terms of area, is organized as a scattered municipality: not a single inhabited center, but a collection of hamlets distributed along the valley floor and on the slopes, including Prati (Wiesen), the seat of the town hall and main administrative functions, Caminata (Kematen) further upstream, and San Giacomo (St. Jakob), the highest and most inland settlement in the valley. The urban landscape blends with the rural one: scattered farms, bell towers, and small churches dot a valley floor enclosed between wooded slopes, while the provincial road that climbs the valley progressively connects the hamlets until it disappears, at altitude, among pastures and mountain huts. The proximity to Vipiteno, a historic junction on the Brenner Pass, has always made Val di Vizze a lateral but vital branch of one of the main Alpine corridors between Italy and Austria.

A glacial valley between mountain huts and pastures

The territory of the Val di Vizze preserves some of the best-conserved natural environments in the Alta Valle Isarco. The Palude Lago di Vizze biotope, a peat bog wetland formed in the valley floor, and the Sanderau biotope, with its riparian vegetation along the Rio di Vizze, are protected for the importance of the flora and fauna they host, from waterfowl to insects linked to high-altitude wetlands. Ascending towards the bottom of the valley, the landscape becomes increasingly severe: larch and Swiss pine woods give way to rocky pastures and finally to the walls of the Gran Pilastro (Hochfeiler), which with its 3,509 meters is the highest peak in the entire Val d'Isarco, along with other peaks exceeding 3,400 meters. Small high-altitude alpine lakes, including the Grafsee and the small lakes near the Passo di Vizze, dot the glacial cirques above 2,000 meters, making the upper part of the valley a coveted destination for those seeking still little-frequented high mountain landscapes.

History, peasant culture and experiences in the valley

The first traces of settlement in Val di Vizze date back to around 600 AD, but it is a donation deed from 827 that first mentions the localities of Flaines and Tulve in a document, then assigned to the monastery of San Candido. Around 1070, a landslide is said to have drained an ancient lake that occupied the upper valley, thus opening up the inner lands towards San Giacomo to stable colonization. The municipality in its current form was established in 1931, from the merger of the then separate communities of Prati and Vizze. Even today, the population, largely German-speaking with an Italian minority concentrated in Prati near the railway station on the Brenner line, keeps alive an economy linked to mountain farms (masi), livestock farming, and the processing of milk in alpine huts (malghe). The manor of Castel Moos, now converted into a retirement home, recalls the valley's ancient role as a border territory; visiting it today means alternating walks among the masi, stops at the malghe to taste local dairy products, and the discovery of the small churches that dot the hamlets.

Not to be missed

  • A stop at the Prantneralm or Rotbachlhütte mountain huts, among pastures and alpine cheeses
  • The cross-country ski trail between Caminata and San Giacomo, at the foot of the Zillertal Alps
  • The Palude Lago di Vizze wetland biotope, among peat bogs and high-altitude wildlife
  • The climb toward the Gran Pilastro (Hochfeiler), the highest peak of the Val d'Isarco
