Tubre nella Val Monastero, al confine con la Svizzera
Tubre occupa l'estremità sud-orientale della Val Monastero, la valle che dal Passo del Forno scende fino a incontrare la Val Venosta e che per circa due terzi appartiene alla Svizzera, nel Canton Grigioni. Il confine corre a pochi chilometri dal capoluogo, segnato da un valico doganale che collega Tubre al villaggio svizzero di Müstair, primo abitato oltre frontiera. Questa posizione ha reso il paese, per secoli, un punto di passaggio tra il mondo retico-romancio e quello tirolese, tanto che la tradizione narra di un passaggio di Carlo Magno diretto a Roma nell'800. Fino ai primi dell'Ottocento la comunità parlava romancio, come tuttora avviene nell'alta valle svizzera; l'abbandono di questa lingua a favore del tedesco segnò l'avvicinamento culturale di Tubre al Tirolo, mentre il passaggio all'Italia, nel 1919, ne fissò i confini attuali. Oggi il paese, con le sue frazioni, conserva un impianto rurale raccolto attorno al Rio di Tubre, tra pendii coltivati e boschi verso le Alpi Retiche.
La chiesa di San Giovanni e gli affreschi romanici
The most famous monument in Tubre is the church of San Giovanni Battista, built on the ruins of a Benedictine abbey founded in the 9th century and which fell into ruin around 1130. In 1218, the nobleman Schwiker von Reichenberg ceded the building to the Order of the Hospitallers, later known as the Order of Malta, who enlarged it according to an unusual Greek cross plan and had its walls decorated with frescoes of Byzantine inspiration, dating from around 1220-1230. Biblical scenes and figures of patrons are displayed on the southern wall and vault, while the stone ashlar facade is opened by a large portal with three segmental arches. On the northern wall, the image of Saint Christopher stands out, the oldest depiction of the saint in the Tyrolean area and one of the largest in the Alpine arc, alongside Gothic frescoes from 1383. Deconsecrated in the 18th century, the church passed to the municipality of Tubre in 1832 and underwent important restorations that make it today one of the best-preserved Romanesque pictorial cycles in South Tyrol.
The Santo Spirito hospice and the history of pilgrims
Next to the church, the Order of the Hospitallers also built a hospice intended to accommodate pilgrims and travelers ascending the Val Monastero towards the Alpine passes and Switzerland. From the 14th century onwards, the upper portico served as a dormitory, while the lower one was used as a lounge for passing pilgrims, in a hospitality system that reflected Tubre's vocation as a border stop along one of the oldest routes in the Rhaetian Alps. The presence of the Order, which later merged with the Knights of Malta, linked the fate of the village for centuries to a welfare network that offered refuge, care, and spiritual support to those undertaking the journey towards the snowy passes. With the progressive abandonment of the structure in the 16th century, its reception function ceased, but its memory remains intertwined with that of the nearby church, a testament to an era when faith and the welcome of travelers were part of border life.
The Stelvio National Park and nature
El territori de Tubre s'inclou entre los municipis compresi en el Parc Nacional de Stelvio, la més extensa àrea protegida dels Alps italians, que aquí toca el seu marge occidental abans de trobar, més enllà de la frontera, el Parc Nacional Suís. Al vessant dret de la vall s'alça la cadena del Chavalatsch, contrafort del grup de l'Ortles-Cevedale, amb altituds que al municipi oscil·len entre aproximadament 1.050 fins a més de 3.190 metres. Boscos d'avet roig, làrix i pi negre cobreixen els vessants fins a uns 2.000 metres, deixant pas després a pastures d'alta muntanya on no és estrany trobar cérvols, isards, cabirols i stambecs, a més d'espècies símbol com l'àguila daurada i el trencalòs. Des del cap del poble es ramifiquen senders que pugen cap als refugis i les crestes de frontera, oferint punts d'observació sobre l'anera Val Monastero i, en els dies més clars, vistes sobre les muntanyes del Cantó dels Grisons: un patrimoni naturalístic que fa de Tubre una porta d'accés silenciosa a un dels ambients alpins millor conservats d'Europa.
Tradició i experiències entre dues cultures
La vida de Tubre roman marcada pel seu ser municipi de frontera i de llengua alemanya, amb més del 97% de la població que parla alemany com a llengua materna: una identitat que es reflecteix en les arquitectures rurals, en les festes religioses i en l'agricultura de muntanya, practicada sobre unes 350 hectàrees entre prats de dall, pastures i petits horts. El poble és també punt de partida ideal per a qui vulgui visitar, a pocs quilòmetres de distància, el poble suís de Müstair amb la seva cèlebre abadia carolíngia, patrimoni de la humanitat UNESCO pels frescos altomedievals que custodia, assolible a peu o en bicicleta al llarg de la carretera de la vall, tot i romandre fora del territori municipal de Tubre. Al poble s'organitzen periòdicament visites guiades a l'església de Sant Joan, mercats relacionats amb els productes de l'alpeig i caminades temàtiques al llarg dels senders de la vall, mentre que l'hospitalitat en petites estructures familiars permet descobrir un racó d'Alt Adige on l'alemany, la història austríaca i la proximitat a Suïssa componen una identitat única.
