Tenno on the plateau above Riva del Garda
The municipality of Tenno occupies a plateau that rises above Riva del Garda, in the Trentino part of the upper Lake Garda, in a territory included in the wider area of Garda Trentino. The capital, located at about 428 meters above sea level, is surrounded by the hamlets of Canale, Cologna-Gavazzo, Pranzo and Ville del Monte, small stone clusters scattered over an area of almost thirty square kilometers that rises from the shores of Lake Garda towards the first reliefs of the Ledro Alps. This elevated position gives the municipality a mild Mediterranean climate, favorable to olive cultivation, and panoramas ranging from Lake Garda to the peaks that close the valley. The proximity to Riva del Garda and Arco makes Tenno an easily accessible destination, while maintaining a rural and secluded character compared to the more touristy centers on the lake shore.
Lake Tenno and the reappearing island
Tenno Lake is located at an altitude of about 570 meters, just above the main town, and is famous for the color of its waters, which range from turquoise to deep blue depending on the light and the season. The basin was formed by a landslide that blocked the course of the Rio Secco, creating a body of water of natural origin, now protected since 2024 as a local nature reserve, established to protect the flora and fauna of the area. A geographical curiosity makes it even more unique: in the center of the lake, there is a small island, which first appeared in 1986 and was therefore nicknamed Isola dell'86 (Island of '86). During periods of drought or in the warmer months, when the water level drops, it becomes a real peninsula reachable on foot via a strip of land. The lake shores, equipped for swimming, are a destination for bathers and hikers in the summer season.
Canale di Tenno, among the most beautiful villages in Italy
The hamlet of Canale di Tenno is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Trentino, documented since 1211 and included in the club of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The original urban layout, centered on four streets converging in a small central square, has remained almost intact: stone houses, wooden portals, and characteristic covered passages, the 'avvolti', connect the buildings, creating an almost labyrinthine path. After a period of depopulation following World War I, the village experienced a revival thanks to the Piedmontese painter Giacomo Vittone, who from the 1950s chose it as a place of inspiration, signing his works as Pictor Dominicus. In 1967, the Casa degli Artisti (House of Artists) was founded in his name, which still hosts Italian and foreign painters and sculptors today, promoting exhibitions, courses, and study stays in a context that combines peasant memory and artistic vocation.
Landscape between olive trees and the Varone Waterfall
Il territorio di Tenno alterna boschi di latifoglie, pascoli d'altura e terrazzamenti coltivati a ulivo, che alimentano una tradizione olearia antica quanto il castello stesso: già nel Duecento parte delle rendite del maniero veniva versata in olio. Ancora oggi l'olivicoltura, favorita dal microclima mite del Garda Trentino, resta un tratto identitario del paesaggio agricolo locale. Le acque del lago di Tenno, infiltrandosi nel sottosuolo carsico, alimentano il torrente Magnone, che nel corso di migliaia di anni ha scavato una forra profonda quasi cento metri, dando origine alla Cascata del Varone, nota fin dall'Ottocento come una delle attrazioni naturalistiche più spettacolari dell'alto Garda, benché il parco di visita si trovi amministrativamente nel comune di Tenno pur essendo a pochi chilometri da Riva del Garda. Sentieri escursionistici collegano il capoluogo, le frazioni e il lago, offrendo percorsi adatti sia a passeggiate familiari sia a camminate più impegnative verso l'altopiano.
Storia, il Castello e le tradizioni
Le prime notizie del Castello di Tenno risalgono agli inizi del Duecento, quando la fortificazione era amministrata dai conti di Appiano-Ultimo; tra il 1210 e il 1211 i proprietari cedettero i loro diritti al principe vescovo di Trento Federico Wanga, in cambio di alcuni feudi e di una rendita in olio, e il maniero divenne proprietà vescovile. Nel 1260 fu concesso in investitura feudale ai signori d'Arco, che lo tennero per circa un quarto di secolo, in una posizione strategica lungo la via che dal Garda conduceva alle Valli Giudicarie. Il castello fa parte di un borgo fortificato, tipologia rara nel contesto trentino, e domina ancora oggi l'abitato con i suoi resti murari. Alle vicende feudali si affiancano tradizioni più recenti, come i mercatini natalizi che animano l'inverno di Tenno e delle sue frazioni, e un'economia che oggi combina turismo, agricoltura e allevamento, mantenendo vivo il legame con la terra che ha sempre caratterizzato questo altopiano sopra il Garda.
