Since the end of the 19th century, Soprabolzano and the Renon plateau became a summer resort for the bourgeoisie of Bolzano, who sought relief from the city heat here. The transport infrastructure played a decisive role: first the Renon railway, then the cable car that replaced the lower section, made the plateau easily accessible from Bolzano, fostering the development of mountain-style hotels and villas. Even today, these two historic means of transport remain the symbol of the area's tourist identity.

Nature, earth pyramids, and views of the Dolomites

The Renon plateau is famous for its earth pyramids, peculiar spire-shaped geological formations created by erosion, crowned by a boulder that protects them from rain. Several paths connect Soprabolzano to these curious landforms, nestled among larch and fir forests. From the panoramic viewpoints in and around the village, the gaze sweeps over the Dolomite peaks, including Catinaccio and Latemar, which on clear days offer very evocative views, especially at sunset.

What to do in Soprabolzano

The village is an excellent starting point for walks and hikes of varying difficulty, suitable for both families and those seeking more challenging hikes towards the woods and farmhouses of the plateau. An unmissable experience is a ride on the Renon railway, which connects Soprabolzano to Collalbo through rural landscapes, or the cable car descent to Bolzano, offering panoramic views of the entire city basin. In winter, the plateau also offers cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing routes in the quiet of the snowy woods.

South Tyrolean flavors and traditions

The cuisine of Soprabolzano reflects the South Tyrolean mountain traditions: dumplings, speck, alpine cheeses, and desserts like apple strudel appear on the menus of local huts and restaurants, often accompanied by wines from Alto Adige. In the farmhouses of the plateau, it is possible to discover genuine products linked to mountain farming and agriculture, while the wooden architecture of traditional houses and small seasonal markets tell of a culture still strongly linked to the territory and the German language.
