A sunny terrace on the Val di Non
Sfruz occupies a fortunate position on the eastern side of the Val di Non, in Trentino-Alto Adige, on a sun-exposed plateau overlooking the valley below. The small village is surrounded by cultivated fields and woods that rise towards the Predaia plateau, in a still very authentic rural setting. Its proximity to Smarano, Coredo, and Taio makes Sfruz a good base for exploring the entire area, while still retaining the discreet charm of a less crowded mountain village.
History and origins of the village
Come molti centri della Val di Non, Sfruz affonda le proprie radici in un'economia rurale di montagna, legata da secoli alla coltivazione dei campi, all'allevamento e allo sfruttamento dei boschi circostanti. Il piccolo nucleo abitato si è sviluppato in forma compatta attorno alla chiesa parrocchiale del paese, secondo lo schema tipico dei villaggi trentini di mezza costa. Nel corso del Novecento l'economia locale si è progressivamente orientata verso la frutticoltura, in particolare la coltivazione della mela, che ha trasformato il paesaggio agricolo mantenendo intatto il carattere raccolto del borgo.
Natura tra meleti, boschi di larici e l'altopiano della Predaia
Il territorio di Sfruz è segnato dal contrasto tra i meleti ordinati che ricoprono i versanti più bassi e i boschi di larici e conifere che salgono verso l'altopiano della Predaia. Questa vasta area boscata, condivisa con i comuni vicini, è caratterizzata da sentieri ombrosi, radure e un microclima fresco anche in piena estate. In primavera la fioritura dei meli tinge di bianco e rosa i campi attorno al paese, mentre in autunno i larici regalano tonalità dorate che accompagnano la raccolta delle mele.

Sfruz is an excellent starting point for those who enjoy leisurely walks through the orchards and woods of the area. Paths and farm tracks branch out from the village, connecting nearby hamlets and leading towards the Predaia plateau, suitable for both short strolls and longer excursions through meadows and coniferous forests. The valley floor of Val di Non, with its towns and lakes, is easily accessible, while those seeking wider panoramas can continue towards the paths that cross the high-altitude woods, amidst silence and fresh mountain air.
