A Ladin municipality born from Pozza and Vigo di Fassa
San Giovanni di Fassa is a municipality born on January 1, 2018, from the merger of Pozza di Fassa and Vigo di Fassa, two of the best-known villages in the Val di Fassa, in Trentino. Pozza di Fassa, nestled in the valley floor along the Avisio stream, is known for its thermal baths and for being a lively tourist hub in summer and winter. Vigo di Fassa, the historic capital of the valley, retains a characteristic center with traditional Fassa buildings and has always represented the main cultural and administrative center of the valley. The merger has created a stronger and more cohesive municipality, capable of jointly enhancing the natural, cultural, and tourist heritage of the entire Val di Fassa, while keeping alive the distinct identity of each of the two original hamlets, with their churches, squares, and local traditions.
The Catinaccio/Rosengarten and the Torri del Vajolet
The territory of San Giovanni di Fassa is dominated by the Catinaccio massif, called Rosengarten in German, one of the most famous and photographed Dolomite groups, included since 2009 in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site "Dolomites". Its vertical walls culminate in the famous Torri del Vajolet, three rock spires that for over a century have attracted mountaineers and climbing enthusiasts from all over the world, reachable through high-mountain paths and excursions that start from the local refuges. When the garden was discovered and destroyed by enemies, Laurin cursed it so that no one could ever see it again, neither by day nor by night: however, he forgot about dawn and dusk, the moments when, still today, the walls of the Catinaccio are tinged with intense pink and red, the phenomenon known as enrosadira. This natural spectacle, which repeats every evening at sunset with favorable sky conditions, is one of the most evocative moments to experience in San Giovanni di Fassa, observable from numerous panoramic points in the village and from the paths that wind towards the massif.
Ladin culture and language: the Ladin Museum of Fassa
San Giovanni di Fassa is one of the most significant centers of Ladin culture in the Dolomites, a guardian of an ancient language spoken in the Ladin valleys for centuries and still alive today in daily life, schools, and local signage.
