Η ιστορία του/της San Cassiano

Introduction and location in Alta Badia

San Cassiano is located at about 1,535 meters above sea level in the southern part of Val Badia, within the municipal territory of Badia, in the province of Bolzano. It is one of the most elegant villages in Alta Badia, the Dolomite plateau which also includes Corvara, Colfosco, and La Villa. Its secluded location, at the foot of the Sasso della Croce and just a few minutes from the Valparola Pass, makes it an ideal base both in winter and summer for exploring the Dolomites, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

History and Ladin culture

San Cassiano is part of Val Badia, one of the Ladin valleys of the Dolomites where Ladin, a Rhaeto-Romance language with ancient roots, is still spoken today, alongside Italian and German. The local community keeps traditions, religious festivals, and a strong sense of identity tied to Dolomite legends alive, such as that of the Fanes, a legendary people linked precisely to the plateau that dominates the area. Small churches, traditional farmhouses, and Tyrolean architecture tell the story of a mountain community that has managed to reconcile international tourism and cultural roots.

Nature: Dolomites, Fanes-Sennes-Braies and Sasso della Croce

San Cassiano is surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Dolomites. To the north lies the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, a vast karst plateau with alpine lakes, pastures, and rocky cliffs, habitat of chamois and golden eagles. To the south stands the imposing Sasso della Croce, in Ladin Sas dla Crusc, a massif whose spires close the village skyline. This protected natural context offers unique views in every season, from red fir forests to high-altitude meadows, a destination for naturalists and photographers.

What to do: skiing, hiking, and gastronomy

In winter, San Cassiano is connected to the Alta Badia ski area, part of the Dolomiti Superski circuit, with well-maintained slopes and direct connections to the famous Sella Ronda circuit. In summer, the lifts open for hikers and mountain bikers, with trails leading to Fanes-Sennes-Braies and the Scotoni Hut. Food lovers will find a concentration of top-level restaurants here, some awarded Michelin stars, which combine Ladin tradition and contemporary haute cuisine, making San Cassiano an internationally recognized gourmet destination.

Ladin flavors and traditions

San Cassiano's cuisine is rooted in Ladin and Tyrolean tradition: canederli, casunziei, orzotto, and polenta served with mountain pasture cheeses are recurring dishes in huts and refuges. Alongside starred restaurants, traditional wooden stube (dining rooms) survive where simple and genuine dishes are enjoyed, often based on products from nearby mountain pastures. Markets and seasonal festivals offer the opportunity to discover local crafts, from textiles to wood carvings, a living testament to the Ladin culture of Val Badia.
