Ronchi Valsugana, a village in the lower Valsugana
Ronchi Valsugana stands on the northern slope of the lower Valsugana, exposed to the sun above the course of the Brenta river, not far from Torcegno, Roncegno Terme, and Borgo Valsugana. It is one of the smallest municipalities in Trentino, a compact nucleus of houses and scattered farmsteads among sloping meadows, with a view of the valley below and the peaks of the Lagorai that close the horizon to the north. Its secluded position relative to the main tourist routes has preserved its rural character and the typical tranquility of Trentino mountain villages.
History and origins
As many villages in the lower Valsugana, Ronchi Valsugana owes its name to the "ronchi", the cleared lands made cultivable with difficulty on the slopes, a testament to an ancient agricultural and silvo-pastoral economy. For centuries, the community's life revolved around the masi (mountain farms), small terraced plots, and the exploitation of the surrounding woods, in close relationship with the Lagorai territory. Local history is intertwined with that of the neighboring municipalities of Valsugana, sharing their administrative and ecclesiastical events over the centuries.
Nature between Lagorai, meadows, and woods
The municipal territory extends from the sunny meadows around the inhabited area to the chestnut woods and higher altitudes at the foot of the Lagorai, the long mountain chain that separates Valsugana from Val di Fiemme and Fassa. The landscape alternates cultivated clearings, hedges, and rows with denser wooded areas, in a mosaic typical of the mid-altitude Trentino mountains. The variety of environments favors a rich presence of alpine flora and fauna, while the panoramic openings offer wide views of the Brenta valley and the opposite slopes.

Ronchi Valsugana is a good starting point for walks and hikes through meadows, farmsteads, and chestnut groves, with paths connecting to the trail network of the lower Valsugana and the foothills of Lagorai. The roads and trails that climb from the valley floor allow you to gradually reach higher altitudes, through woods and clearings, suitable for both short walks and more challenging mountain itineraries. The tranquility of the village is also ideal for regenerative stays, away from traffic and mass tourism, in an authentically rural setting.
