Pieve Tesino on the Tesino Plateau
Pieve Tesino is located at over 800 meters above sea level in the heart of the Tesino Plateau, the pre-Alpine basin carved by the Grigno stream between the northern foothills of the Lagorai and the first reliefs that descend towards the province of Belluno. Together with the neighboring municipalities of Castello Tesino and Cinte Tesino, Pieve Tesino shares a territory of fir and beech woods, high-altitude pastures, and a harsh climate that for centuries made agricultural life difficult, pushing the inhabitants towards itinerant trades. The municipality includes, in addition to the main town, the small hamlets of Malene and Pradellano, and is distinguished by its attention to its historical heritage: in 2021 it became part of the "I Borghi più belli d'Italia" (The most beautiful villages in Italy) circuit, an award that confirms the quality of the historic center, with its stone houses, arcades, and narrow streets that open around the parish church.
Alcide De Gasperi and the House Museum
Pieve Tesino is known throughout Europe as the birthplace of Alcide De Gasperi, born here on April 3, 1881, to Amedeo, a major marshal in the Austro-Hungarian gendarmerie, and Maria Morandini, originally from Predazzo. Raised in this corner of Trentino, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, De Gasperi would carry with him throughout his life the bond with his land of origin, a bond that would influence his commitment to the autonomy of Trentino first and to the construction of European unity later, as one of the founding fathers of the European Union alongside Schuman and Adenauer. The house where he was born and spent his childhood is now a museum, managed by the Fondazione Trentina Alcide De Gasperi, which retraces his biography through documents, photographs, and personal objects, returning to the visitor the family and social context from which one of the most important figures in 20th-century European political history emerged.
The 'perteghieri' and the tradition of prints
Before becoming famous for De Gasperi, Pieve Tesino and the entire Altopiano were known throughout Europe for another story: that of the 'perteghieri', the traveling salesmen who, starting from the 17th century, after the fortune of flint collection ran out, began to travel the continent's roads to sell prints, sacred images, and small printed works, carried hanging from a long wooden pole from which their name derives. Within a few decades, the Tesino merchants managed to open about sixty shops across Europe, from Vienna to Paris, building a real commercial network that brought wealth and cultural openness to an otherwise isolated territory. This extraordinary story is now told in the Museo Per Via, set up in Casa Buffa Giacantoni, the ancient home of a family of printers, where documents, matrices, and original prints recreate the trade and routes of these itinerant merchants.
The Garden of Europe, Cima d'Asta, and nature
A pochi passi dal centro di Pieve Tesino si estende l'Arboreto del Tesino, un giardino botanico che raccoglie alberi e arbusti da tutto il mondo tra boschi, radure e prati, e che al suo interno ospita il Giardino d'Europa, uno spazio dedicato ad Alcide De Gasperi e agli altri padri fondatori dell'Unione Europea, pensato come luogo di riflessione sul percorso di integrazione del continente. Il paesaggio naturale che circonda l'Altopiano del Tesino è dominato dalla catena del Lagorai e, in particolare, dal massiccio granitico di Cima d'Asta, che con i suoi 2.847 metri è una delle mete più ambite dagli escursionisti e dagli alpinisti della zona, punto di partenza e di arrivo dell'Alta Via del Granito. Boschi di conifere, pascoli d'alta quota e piccoli biotopi come quello dei Mughi completano un territorio che d'inverno si anima anche grazie alla vicinanza del comprensorio sciistico di Passo Brocon.
Storia ed esperienze a Pieve Tesino
La storia di Pieve Tesino affonda le radici nel Medioevo, quando il territorio fu a lungo conteso tra la giurisdizione del principe vescovo di Trento e quella del vescovo di Feltre, lungo un confine che ancora oggi segna culturalmente l'Altopiano. Nel centro storico, tra case in pietra e vicoli, spicca la chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, una delle costruzioni gotiche più significative del Trentino, insieme alla chiesa di San Sebastiano. Pieve Tesino può inoltre vantare un primato singolare: qui nacque, nel 1881, la prima Pro Loco d'Italia, segno precoce di un'attenzione alla valorizzazione del territorio che prosegue ancora oggi. Il paese si presta a un turismo lento, fatto di visite ai musei dedicati a De Gasperi e ai perteghieri, passeggiate nell'Arboreto ed escursioni verso i Lagorai e Cima d'Asta, ed è un punto di partenza ideale per esplorare l'intero Altopiano del Tesino insieme ai vicini borghi di Castello Tesino e Cinte Tesino.
