Fai della Paganella on the Paganella Plateau
Fai della Paganella rises at just over 950 meters above sea level on a wide, sunny balcony of the homonymous Paganella Plateau, in the province of Trento, between the Brenta Dolomites and the Adige Valley. The municipal territory, extending for about 12 square kilometers, includes the main town and the hamlets of Cortalta and Villa, and borders Andalo, Mezzolombardo, Spormaggiore, and Cavedago. From the meadows and apple orchards surrounding the village, the view ranges over the underlying Rotaliana Plain and the Adige Valley, while behind it, the plateau gradually rises towards the beech forests and high-altitude meadows that precede Cima Paganella. This position, halfway between the valley floor and the mountain, has made Fai a holiday destination since the early twentieth century, when a now-disused funicular connected the Zambana Vecchia train station, in the Adige Valley, with the plateau, making the village easily accessible for summer holidays.
Paganella and skiing: from the village to the summit
Fai della Paganella is one of the starting villages of the Paganella ski area, which climbs from the village with lifts up to Cima Paganella, at 2125 meters, the highest point of the skiable area. The Santel-Meriz chairlift takes you in a single jump from the village to the Rifugio Meriz, at 1400 meters, from which other lifts branch off towards the summit; among the best-known slopes is 'La Rocca', where generations of local children have learned to ski. The resort, shared with Andalo and Molveno, has a total of about 50 kilometers of slopes and over 1100 meters of altitude difference, served by a network of chairlifts, cable cars, and magic carpets, with artificial snowmaking that guarantees opening for the entire winter season. Alongside slopes for expert skiers, Fai della Paganella dedicates ample space to families, with areas and ski schools designed for children, in line with the village's vocation as a child-friendly winter sports destination.
Views of the Brenta and summer outdoors
From Cima Paganella, reachable in summer with lifts also open in the warm season, one of Trentino's most celebrated panoramas opens up: to the west, the spires and walls of the Brenta Dolomites stand out, spectacular especially in the first light of dawn, while to the east, the view descends onto the Val d'Adige and the Piana Rotaliana. Another panoramic point closer to the village is the cross on Monte Fausior, the destination of a short walk from the meadows of Fai, from which the entire plateau can be seen. In summer, the territory transforms into an open-air park for hiking and mountain biking, with itineraries such as the Sentiero delle Aquile (Eagle's Path) that wind through woods, mountain huts, and ridges, suitable both for those seeking a quiet walk through the meadows and for those tackling more challenging routes towards the higher altitudes of the plateau.
The Breath Park and the beech woods
The landscape of Fai della Paganella is marked by beech woods that surround the village and which, according to one of the most accredited hypotheses, gave the toponym Fai its name. In one of these woods, the Parco del Respiro was born, a therapeutic wellness park designed for a journey of slowing down and listening in contact with nature: among the beeches, there are hammocks, areas for yoga and meditation, and guided forest bathing trails for adults and children. In autumn, the forest lights up with the typical colors of the beech, attracting visitors and hikers, while in September the village hosts 'Orme', a festival dedicated to walking and the plateau's trails. This attention to the forest and its rhythms makes Fai della Paganella a destination capable of offering, on the same day, mountain sports and moments of regenerating tranquility.
History and experiences on the plateau
The origins of Fai della Paganella date back to prehistory: excavations at Doss Castel have yielded traces of Bronze Age settlements attributed to the Rhaetian population, testifying to the plateau's occupation thousands of years ago. The village first appears in medieval documents between 1177 and 1184, under the name 'Vai', linked to the Counts of Appiano. Among the most significant historical testimonies are the church of San Rocco, in the hamlet of Cortalta, considered the oldest sacred building in the municipality, the parish church of San Nicolò in the main town, and the Palazzo di Fai, an elegant summer residence built in 1620. During the 20th century, the historic funicular that connected the station of Zambana Vecchia, in the Adige Valley, with the plateau helped launch Fai della Paganella as a holiday destination, a role that the village, now joined by the neighboring centers of Andalo and Molveno in the Paganella tourist district, continues to play through skiing, hiking, and slow tourism initiatives linked to the forest.
