Cornedo all'Isarco at the Entrance to the Val d'Ega

Cornedo all'Isarco lies at the point where the Isarco valley, just north of Bolzano, widens to make room for the entrance of the Val d'Ega, the side valley carved by the Rio Nero that climbs toward the Dolomites of the Catinaccio and Latemar. The municipality is divided into six hamlets spread between the valley floor and the surrounding plateaus: Cardano, seat of the town hall and a key link to Bolzano, and Prato all'Isarco (Blumau) lie along the river, while Cornedo, which gives the municipality its name, Collepietra (Steinegg, the most populous hamlet), San Valentino in Campo (Gummer) and Briè (Breien) sit higher up, on the wooded slopes overlooking the valley. This hinge position between plain and mountain is also reflected in the linguistic makeup: more than 87% of residents have German as their mother tongue, placing Cornedo all'Isarco among the most markedly German-speaking municipalities of the lower Isarco valley, alongside an Italian-speaking minority historically settled mainly in Cardano.

Castel Cornedo (Schloss Karneid)

The landmark monument of the municipality is Castel Cornedo, in German Schloss Karneid, perched on a rocky spur above Cardano and visible from much of the valley floor. Its origins date to the 13th century, when the Lords of Greifenstein laid its foundations under the name castrum de Curniet; passed to the Lords of Völs and then, from 1378 to 1760, to the Counts von Liechtenstein, the castle took on its present form during the 16th century, with the addition of the western gate tower and, in 1573, of the eastern tower linked by a zwinger, which moved the main entrance to the opposite side. Inside, the keep, the residential tower with its great hall, the courtyard with open staircases and a two-storey loggia are still preserved, together with the small chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, decorated with 14th-century frescoes including a famous Triumph of Death. Privately owned by the family of Baron von Malaisé, the castle has been open to the public since 2006, with guided tours by reservation from April to October on Friday afternoons, except during the summer closure in July and August.

A Gateway to the Catinaccio and Latemar

From Cardano branches off the Val d'Ega, followed by state road SS241, the first stretch of the Great Dolomites Road climbing toward Nova Levante, the Costalunga Pass and Lake Carezza, at the foot of the Catinaccio and Latemar. This makes Cornedo all'Isarco a gateway to two of the Dolomites' best-known climbing areas: along the valley one finds crags and equipped walls of every level, from the Kleine Rotwand at Costalunga Pass to the Vipernstein wall at Obereggen, together with via ferrata routes that let hikers reach ridges and summits without advanced gear. In summer the valley draws climbers and hikers up from conifer woods to high pastures, with views over the Dolomite spires; in winter the same slopes, further toward Obereggen and Carezza, turn into ski areas linked to the large Val d'Ega-Latemar-Obereggen carousel.

Woods, Earth Pyramids and Plateaus

The municipal territory also holds striking natural environments far from the Dolomite peaks. Above Collepietra (Steinegg), amid larch and fir woods, a circular loop trail leads to the earth pyramids, natural sculptures up to thirty metres tall shaped over thousands of years by erosion in glacial moraine clay, each one capped by a harder boulder that slows its decay. The route, about four and a half kilometres long with a modest elevation gain, crosses the Katzenbach gorge and passes isolated farmsteads before looping back to the village. Higher up, toward San Valentino in Campo (Gummer), the landscape opens into grassy plateaus dotted with farmsteads, with views ranging from the Dolomites to the Sciliar massif, while the valley floor around Cardano and Prato all'Isarco remains the domain of orchards and the cycle path that follows the Isarco river toward Bolzano.

History, Hydroelectric Power and Village Life

The history of Cornedo all'Isarco has long been tied to the feudal jurisdiction centred on the castle: the territory formed an ancient judicial district administered, between the 14th and 16th centuries, by the Lords of Liechtenstein, before passing under the Habsburg Empire and, from 1919, to Italy, while keeping a strong German cultural and linguistic imprint that endures today. In the twentieth century the town also developed an industrial side linked above all to the Cardano hydroelectric power station, operating since 1929 and recognisable by its five penstock pipes visible on the hillside. In San Valentino in Campo stands the Max Valier Observatory and Planetarium, a reference point for astronomy in South Tyrol. The municipality belongs to the Alpine Pearls network, which promotes soft mobility between the valley's villages, and is crossed by the Isarco Valley cycle path and by the urban bus line connecting it to Bolzano, making it a convenient base for exploring both the valley floor and the higher slopes toward the Catinaccio and Latemar.
