The municipality of Val Venosta is located in the heart of the Val Venosta, the valley that stretches west to the Resia Pass, nestled between the slopes of the Ortler Alps and the Texel Group. The municipality occupies a strategic position along the Adige valley floor, a short distance from both Silandro, the valley's capital, and Naturno, the gateway to Merano and the Burggraviato. This location has historically made it a point of passage and exchange, favored by the relative width of the alluvial plain that opens up here compared to the narrower sections of the valley further upstream. The landscape is typical of the Val Venosta: terraced cultivated slopes, coniferous forests at higher altitudes, and an intensely worked valley floor, in an alpine context marked by unusual brightness and aridity for the region, making it one of the most popular destinations in South Tyrol.
Castel Castelbello (Schloss Kastelbell)
Castel Castelbello, known in German as Schloss Kastelbell, is the namesake and dominant feature of the village, and one of the most imposing castles in the Val Venosta. Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Adige River, the castle controlled passage through the valley and the security of trade routes in medieval times. Over the centuries, it underwent expansions and transformations, passing through various noble families before, after a period of abandonment, being subject to conservative restoration. Today, the structure is open to the public and hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural events, and initiatives related to the history and traditions of the valley, becoming a reference point for visitors to Castelbello-Ciardes who wish to understand the role the fortification played in controlling this stretch of the Val Venosta.
High-altitude orchards and vineyards

The Val Venosta cycle path and the Via Claudia Augusta
Castelbello-Ciardes is crossed by two historic connecting routes that today make it a privileged stop for slow tourism. The Val Venosta cycle path runs along the valley floor, following the course of the Adige River, connecting Resia to Merano and beyond, and passes right at the foot of the village, offering views of the castle and the surrounding vineyards. In parallel, the municipal territory preserves sections of the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, the Roman road that linked the Po Valley to the Danube, crossing the Rhaetian Alps, of which the Val Venosta constituted a fundamental stretch. Traveling these routes today, on foot or by bicycle, means retracing a millennia-old communication route, crossing orchards, vineyards, and small rural settlements in a context that combines gentle mobility, history, and mountain agricultural landscape.
Sunny climate, hamlets and excursions
The municipality of Castelbello-Ciardes includes, in addition to the main town, the hamlets of Ciardes (Tschars) and Colsano (Galsaun), small rural nuclei nestled among apple orchards and vineyards on the sunny slopes of the valley. The climate is one of the distinctive features of the area: the Val Venosta is among the driest and sunniest areas of the entire Alpine arc, with limited rainfall and a high number of sunny days throughout the year, a condition that has allowed the development of crops that would otherwise be difficult at these latitudes. From the valley floor, paths lead up towards the mountain farms, forests, and alpine pastures of the Tessa Group, offering excursions of varying difficulty with views of the entire Val Venosta. Between walks along the Adige, visits to the castle, and more demanding high-altitude hikes, Castelbello-Ciardes is ideal for active tourism that alternates culture, nature, and mountain rural life.
