Avio in the Vallagarina, on the Border with Veneto

Avio lies in the southernmost part of the Vallagarina, the valley carved by the Adige river between Rovereto and the border with Veneto, just a few kilometres from the province of Verona. The municipal territory includes the main town and several hamlets, among them Sabbionara, set on a fertile valley floor squeezed between the slopes of Monte Baldo to the west and the first foothills of the Lessinia to the east. This hinge position between Trentino and Veneto made Avio, over the centuries, a strategic crossing point along the Adige route, contested between different powers and jurisdictions. Even today the landscape tells this border story, with watchtowers, terraced vineyards and a rural fabric that keeps an identity distinct from the more northern parts of the valley.

The Castle of Avio: the Sabbionara Fortress

The landmark monument of Avio is the Castle of Avio, also known as the Sabbionara Castle, one of the best preserved and oldest fortresses in Trentino, today a property of FAI, the Italian National Trust. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Adige valley, the fortified complex unfolds across several rings of walls and houses, within its precincts, the Casa delle Guardie (Guardhouse), famous for an extraordinary cycle of medieval frescoes. The walls depict chivalric scenes, tournaments, sieges and moments of courtly life, a visual narrative that ranks among the best preserved secular fresco cycles in the Alpine region. Climbing through courtyards, walkways and the main tower, visitors retrace centuries of feudal history, spanning the rule of the Counts of Castelbarco and the disputes between the Prince-Bishopric of Trento and the Republic of Venice.

Wine from the Terra dei Forti: Enantio

Avio is one of the reference towns of the Terra dei Forti, the wine-growing area covering the southern stretch of the Vallagarina, so named for the many border fortifications scattered across the territory. Here, for centuries, growers have cultivated Enantio, also called Lambrusco a foglia frastagliata, an indigenous red grape variety that yields structured wines of intense colour and marked acidity, capable of long ageing. The vineyards spread over terraces and alluvial fans at the foot of Monte Baldo, where the mild microclimate also favours other varieties. Several wineries in the area, some family-run for generations, offer guided visits and tastings, telling the story of a territory where viticulture is an integral part of the landscape and local identity, as well as a growing destination for food-and-wine tourism.

Monte Baldo and the Lessinia Landscape

The landscape of Avio is dominated by Monte Baldo, the massif that separates the Vallagarina from Lake Garda and here shows its eastern slopes, rich in woods, pastures and hiking trails with views over the Adige and the Venetian Prealps. On the opposite side of the valley lie the first outcrops of the Lessinia, the karst plateau that extends into Veneto territory, forming a natural amphitheatre that encloses the valley floor planted with vines and orchards. This balance between mountain, hill and river plain makes the municipal territory particularly varied from a natural standpoint, with trails that climb quickly in altitude, offering, within a few hours of walking, environments ranging from terraced vineyards to high-altitude pastures, a contrast that is among the distinguishing traits of the southern Vallagarina.

History, Wineries and Excursions

The history of Avio has been shaped for centuries by its border position: the territory was long disputed between the Prince-Bishopric of Trento and the Republic of Venice, which met their territorial limits here along the Adige. This history is still reflected in the town's fortified architecture and local traditions. Today, this historic border vocation coexists with an active rural economy made up of wineries, farms and small hospitality businesses spread between the main town and its hamlets. The same roads that once linked military outposts have become routes for hiking and cycling, often themed around food and wine, combining a visit to the Castle of Avio with stops at wineries and walks along the Adige or toward the first terraces of Monte Baldo.
