Introduction and location

Uzzano is located in Valdinievole, the Pistoia valley situated between the Lucchese Hills, Montalbano, and the first slopes of the Apennines, not far from the towns of Pescia and Montecatini Terme. The municipal territory is spread over several levels: the historic center, perched on a hill, and the more recent hamlets distributed in the plain below. This intermediate position between hill and plain has always made Uzzano a point of passage and exchange between Valdinievole and the nearby valleys, with an economy linked to agriculture and, in more recent times, to the widespread horticultural activity in the entire area.

History and origins

The origins of Uzzano date back to the Middle Ages, when the fortified village, now known as Uzzano Castello, developed as a defensive outpost along the borders between the territories of Lucca, Pistoia, and Florence, long contested by the various Tuscan powers. Traces of this past can still be recognized in the urban layout of the ancient core, with narrow streets following the contour of the hill and remains of the ancient walls. Over the centuries, the town has shared the historical events of the Valdinievole, coming under Florentine influence and gradually developing as an autonomous agricultural community.

Nature and landscape

The landscape of Uzzano is typical of the hilly Valdinievole: terraces cultivated with olive trees, rows of vines, and large expanses of horticultural nurseries that color the countryside green all year round. From the upper village, the view extends over the plain below and the surrounding hills, even glimpsing the Pistoiese Apennine mountains on clearer days. The network of country roads and hilly paths allows for walks and excursions on foot or by bicycle, among olive groves, small streams, and nearby villages, in a still well-preserved agricultural landscape.

What to do and what to see

The heart of the visit to Uzzano is the historic center of Uzzano Castello, reachable by an uphill walk that offers glimpses of the valley at every turn. Here you can admire the medieval urban layout, the remains of the fortifications, and the village's parish church. Around the town, the ornamental nurseries of Valdinievole offer a characteristic image of the territory, while the nearby towns of Pescia and Montecatini Terme, reachable in a short time, complete an itinerary of art, nature, and thermal relaxation in the Tuscan countryside.

Flavors and traditions

Uzzano's cuisine follows the peasant tradition of Valdinievole, made up of simple dishes linked to garden and olive grove products: vegetable soups, unsalted Tuscan bread, local extra virgin olive oil, and wine from the surrounding hills. Floriculture, in addition to being an economic activity, has become part of the territory's identity, so much so that it characterizes the landscape and trades of entire Uzzano families. Village convivial occasions, often linked to the agricultural calendar and harvest seasons, remain an important moment of gathering for the local community.

Not to be missed

  • The panoramic view over the Valdinievole valley and the Pistoia Apennines from the castle hill
  • The ornamental plant nurseries that shape the surrounding countryside
  • Nearby Pescia and Montecatini Terme, both an easy day-trip away
