Introduction and location
Stazzema rises in the hinterland of Versilia, in the province of Lucca, at the foot of the Apuan Alps, the mountain range that separates the Tyrrhenian coast from Garfagnana. The municipal territory does not have a single compact center, but is composed of numerous hamlets distributed along valleys and ridges, between four hundred and one thousand meters above sea level. This widespread conformation reflects a history of small mountain villages long lived on by pastoralism, chestnuts, and marble quarries, today rediscovered by those seeking slow tourism, wide panoramas, and mountain air just a few kilometers from the sea.
History and origins
The origins of Stazzema date back to the Middle Ages, when its hamlets developed as small agricultural and pastoral settlements linked to the control of the Apennine passes towards Garfagnana. For centuries, the local economy revolved around livestock farming, chestnut cultivation, and, in some hamlets like Levigliani and Terrinca, marble extraction from the Apuan quarries. The most tragic and well-known event in the municipality's history concerns August 12, 1944, when the hamlet of Sant'Anna di Stazzema was the scene of one of the most serious massacres of civilians carried out by Nazi troops in Italy during World War II, an event that has profoundly marked the identity of the town.
Nature and Landscape
The territory of Stazzema largely falls within the Apuan Alps Regional Park, an environment of steep limestone reliefs, rocky walls, chestnut and beech woods, and karst formations of great naturalistic interest. Among the most famous landscape features is Monte Forato, a rocky ridge crossed by a large natural arch visible from a distance, a classic destination for hikers in the area. The slopes are crisscrossed by paths connecting the hamlets to the highest ridges, offering panoramas ranging from the Apuan peaks to the Versilia coast and, on clear days, to the Tuscan sea.

Anyone visiting Stazzema can go trekking along the numerous trails of the Apuan Alps Park, suitable for both experienced hikers and those looking for shorter walks between the hamlets. In Sant'Anna di Stazzema, you can find the Historical Museum of the Resistance, dedicated to the memory of the 1944 massacre and part of the National Peace Park, a place for reflection visited annually by schools and delegations. It is also worth exploring the small stone villages like Pomezzana, Cardoso, Ruosina, and Terrinca, each with its own church and rural layout, to breathe in the authentic atmosphere of the Versilia mountains.
Flavors and traditions
Stazzema's cuisine reflects its mountainous vocation: chestnuts and chestnut flour have always been the basis of typical dishes such as 'necci', as well as local desserts and polenta, while the woods offer highly prized seasonal porcini mushrooms. There is also mountain pecorino cheese and honey produced in the higher hamlets, along with typical cured meats from the Tuscan hinterland. The historical economy linked to marble extraction in the Apuan quarries, especially in the Levigliani area, remains part of the territory's identity, as evidenced by ancient processing practices still recounted in the villages.
