Introduction and location
Sorano is a small municipality in the province of Grosseto, in southern Tuscany, nestled in the Maremma area known as 'Area del Tufo' (Tuff Area), along with the neighboring centers of Pitigliano and Sovana. The village stands on a spur of tuffaceous rock overlooking the valley carved by the Lente stream, a tributary of the Fiora river. This isolated and naturally defended position has made Sorano a strategic stronghold since the Middle Ages. The surrounding landscape alternates between woods, badlands, and typical Maremma cultivations, offering a panorama that changes color with the seasons and attracts travelers seeking authenticity.
History and origins
The origins of Sorano probably date back to the Etruscan period, as evidenced by the "vie cave" (ancient sunken roads) carved into the tuff rock that connect the town to the nearby settlements of Sovana and Pitigliano. In the Middle Ages, the village developed under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family and later passed to the Orsini, who made it a significant fortified center for controlling the southern borders of the Sienese State. Subsequently, Sorano entered the orbit of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under the Medici and then the Lorraine. An ancient Jewish quarter is also preserved in the village, a testament to a small community that resided there for centuries.
Nature and landscape
The territory of Sorano is one of the most striking areas of the Tuscan Maremma, dominated by volcanic tuff formations that have shaped gorges, ravines, and sheer cliffs along the course of the Lente stream. Holm oak and oak woods alternate with clay gullies and olive and vine cultivations, in a landscape that has remained largely unspoiled. The famous "vie cave", ancient Etruscan paths carved into the rock at several meters deep, cross the countryside connecting Sorano to nearby hamlets and offer a timeless atmosphere, appreciated by hikers and nature lovers.
What to do and what to see
The historic center of Sorano is visited on foot, among stone alleys, staircases and covered passages that wind around the Masso Leopoldino, the imposing fortified spur that dominates the town. Not far away stands the Orsini Fortress, a defensive structure of medieval origin expanded in the Renaissance period, today visitable and venue for cultural events. From Sorano it is possible to reach the hamlet of Sovana on foot, following the "vie cave" (ancient Etruscan paths), with its Romanesque Cathedral and the nearby Etruscan necropolis. The village is also suitable for photographic walks, especially in the evening hours when the tuff glows with warm colors.
Flavors and traditions
Sorano's cuisine is rooted in the peasant tradition of the Maremma: extra virgin olive oil, homemade bread, aged pecorino cheese and cured meats accompany dishes based on wild boar and game, often cooked with local herbs. There is no shortage of chestnuts, porcini mushrooms and wines produced on the volcanic soils of the area, which give the products decisive and recognizable flavors. The village trattorias maintain recipes passed down through generations, in a simple and convivial atmosphere. Seasonality still guides the local table today, linked to the rhythm of the crops and the proximity to the woods surrounding the town.
