The municipal territory, born from the administrative union of the previous municipalities of Sillano and Giuncugnano, develops along the Apennine reliefs that separate the Serchio valley from the Emilian side. It is an inland mountain area, with small inhabited centers scattered among ridges and valleys, reachable by taking the roads that go up the Garfagnana towards the Apennine passes.
History and origins
The current municipality is of recent formation, established in 2014 from the merger of the two historic municipalities of Sillano and Giuncugnano, which for centuries had maintained distinct administrative identities while sharing the same mountain location. Like much of Garfagnana, these territories were long under the control of the Este family of Ferrara and Modena, before passing, in later periods, under other jurisdictions. The local economy has historically been based on mountain agriculture, livestock farming, and seasonal transhumance, practices that have shaped the scattered settlement and the small stone villages still visible today.
