Introduction and location

Scarlino is located in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, on a hilly elevation that dominates the Gulf of Follonica along the southern Tyrrhenian coast. The municipal territory includes both the historic hilltop center and the hamlets closer to the sea, such as Scarlino Scalo and Puntone di Scarlino, where there is a tourist port. From the top of the village, the view ranges over the coastal plain, the surrounding hills, and, on clear days, as far as the Island of Elba, making Scarlino a privileged observation point over this entire part of Tuscany.

History and origins

The origins of Scarlino date back to the Middle Ages, when the village developed as a fortified settlement to control the coast and the communication routes of the Maremma region. Over the centuries, the town was contested between the local powers, coming under different influences before entering the orbit of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. A testament to this past is the fortress that still overlooks the inhabited area, along with the remains of the walls and the narrow, vertical urban layout typical of Maremma hillside villages, designed for defense rather than for ease of movement.

Nature and landscape

The territory of Scarlino alternates very different environments: the hill covered by Mediterranean scrub, the coastal strip with sandy beaches and pine forests, and the wetlands that characterize the stretch of Maremma towards the Gulf of Follonica, important for the stopover of numerous species of migratory birds. There is no shortage of paths and scenic roads that connect the historic village to the coast, offering different views depending on the viewpoint: from the profile of the castle emerging among the olive trees to the blue of the sea opening towards Elba, in a landscape still little anthropized compared to other areas of Tuscany.

What to do and what to see

Who visits Scarlino can dedicate time to a walk in the ancient village, among alleys, staircases and small squares that lead up to the fortress, and then continue towards the coastal hamlets to enjoy the sea. Puntone di Scarlino, with its tourist port, is a good base for those who love boating and seaside walks, while Scarlino Scalo offers simpler, everyday services. The combination of the historic village and the coast allows for flexible itineraries, suitable for both a day trip and longer stays to discover the Maremma.

Flavors and traditions

The cuisine of Scarlino reflects the meeting of land and sea typical of the Tuscan Maremma: extra virgin olive oil, local wine, unsalted bread and game-based dishes are alongside preparations of fresh fish and seafood from the Gulf of Follonica. The trattorias in the village and coastal hamlets often offer simple recipes, linked to the seasonality of the products and the agricultural and maritime traditions of the area, offering visitors an authentic taste of Maremma's gastronomic identity, far from the region's more touristy circuits.
