History and origins
The origins of San Gimignano date back to the Etruscan and Roman periods, but it was in the Middle Ages that the village experienced its greatest splendor, thanks to its location along the Via Francigena, the road for pilgrims heading to Rome. The passage of merchants and travelers brought wealth, and local noble families competed in building ever-taller towers, symbols of power and prestige. The town's trattorias and cellars offer Tuscan cuisine accompanied by local wines, while the shops in the center sell extra virgin olive oil, pecorino cheeses, and saffron-based products.
