Reggello: between Pratomagno and Valdarno
Reggello is located in the province of Florence, in Tuscany, nestled on the western slopes of Pratomagno, the Apennine massif that separates the upper Valdarno from Casentino. The municipal territory, large and fragmented into numerous hillside hamlets, overlooks the Arno valley from above, offering views that range from mountain woods to vineyards and olive groves on the plain below. Its location, a few kilometers from Florence and the capital of Valdarno, makes Reggello a point of balance between rural life and proximity to large urban centers, in a typically Tuscan landscape made of hills, ancient villages, and wide green horizons.
History and origins
The origins of Reggello date back to the Middle Ages, when the territory was dotted with castles, parish churches, and fortified settlements linked to the control of the routes connecting the Valdarno to the Casentino and eastern Tuscany. The Vallumbrosan order, founded by Saint John Gualbert, played a leading role, choosing the woods above Reggello for its mother house, thus creating a spiritual and economic center that influenced the lives of local communities for centuries. In the following centuries, Florentine noble families built villas and residences in the surrounding countryside, some of which still survive today as a testament to an agricultural and aristocratic past.
Nature and landscape
Reggello's landscape is marked by the contrast between the Pratomagno mountain, covered with beech and fir forests, and the gentle Valdarno countryside, cultivated with olive groves and vineyards. The Vallombrosa forest, largely a nature reserve, is one of the best-known wooded areas in Tuscany, historically studied for forest management and appreciated for its hiking trails, cool summer air, and intense autumn colors. Climbing towards the ridges of Pratomagno opens up wide panoramas of the Arno valley, while in the lower part of the municipality, the landscape softens into cultivated hills typical of the upper Valdarno.
What to do and what to see
Among the most famous destinations in the area is the Castello di Sammezzano, in the hamlet of Leccio, famous for its Orientalist-style interiors rich in Moorish decorations, among the most surprising and photographed architectures in Tuscany. In Vallombrosa, the ancient Vallombrosan abbey, still inhabited by a monastic community, can be visited along with the surrounding woods and the historic buildings linked to the forestry tradition. In the hamlet of Cascia, the Masaccio Museum of Sacred Art is located, set up in the parish church of San Pietro, which houses important paintings for art lovers. The offer is completed by the numerous hilly hamlets to be discovered slowly among churches, villages, and ancient parish churches.
Flavors and traditions
The cuisine of Reggello reflects the peasant tradition of the Valdarno and the slopes of Pratomagno, based on extra virgin olive oil, Tuscan bread, legumes, and garden products, along with dishes based on chestnuts harvested in the hilly woods in autumn. Olive growing is one of the historic activities of the territory, favored by the exposure of the hills towards the Valdarno, and many local oil mills continue to produce oil using traditional methods. In the autumn months, the communities of the mountain hamlets celebrate their connection with the woods through festivals and markets dedicated to chestnuts, mushrooms, and typical products, simple occasions to get to know the rural life of Pratomagno up close.
