Le origini di Rapolano Terme affondano nel Medioevo, quando il territorio si sviluppò come presidio agricolo e difensivo nell'orbita della Repubblica di Siena, in un'area a lungo contesa con i territori fiorentini e aretini. Nel corso dei secoli il borgo ha conservato tracce di questo passato in alcuni nuclei fortificati sparsi sul territorio comunale. Parallelamente alla storia agricola, l'area ha una lunga tradizione legata alla lavorazione del travertino, roccia calcarea qui estratta fin da epoche remote e utilizzata in edifici storici della zona.
