Introduction and location
Pratovecchio Stia is located in the province of Arezzo, in Casentino, the valley that accompanies the upper course of the Arno River before the river descends towards Florence. The municipality, born from the administrative union of two ancient villages, develops between the valley floor and the first Apennine reliefs, in a border territory between the cultivated plain and the mountain forests. Its location, far from the coast and major cities, has made it for centuries a crossroads of roads, mills, and trade related to wool and timber, maintaining a rural and mountainous identity still recognizable today in the landscape and local customs.
History and origins
The origins of Pratovecchio and Stia date back to the Middle Ages, when the Casentino was controlled by the counts Guidi, a powerful feudal family who built castles and fortifications here to guard the communication routes towards Romagna. Pratovecchio was the birthplace, in 1397, of the painter Paolo Uccello, one of the protagonists of the early Florentine Renaissance. Stia, on the other hand, grew around its square and mills along the Arno, developing a manufacturing vocation linked to wool processing, which in the following centuries became the distinctive feature of the local economy, until the administrative unification of the two centers in 2014.
Nature and landscape
The municipal territory is located at the gates of the Casentinesi Forests National Park, Monte Falterona and Campigna, a protected area characterized by extensive ancient beech forests, fir forests, and fauna including deer, roe deer, and wolves. Precisely on Monte Falterona, within the municipal territory, are the springs that give rise to the Arno, the river that then flows through all of Tuscany. The landscape alternates mountain woods, pastures, and small stone villages, offering trekking routes, mountain biking, and nature excursions suitable for different levels of preparation, with fresh air and a quietness that contrasts with the crowds of coastal destinations.
What to do and see
In the center of Pratovecchio stands out the Castello di Romena, a fortress of the Guidi counts also linked to Dante's Divine Comedy, flanked by the nearby Romanesque parish church of the same name. Not far away stands the Castello di Porciano, another manor of the same family, now home to a small museum. In the hamlet of Stia, life is concentrated around the main square, the historical heart of the village, where the wool mills that animated the local economy once stood. Walking between the two souls of the municipality allows you to alternate visits to the castles, short walks in the nearby woods, and stops in the stone villages of Casentino.
Flavors and traditions
Stia is historically linked to wool processing, as evidenced by the ancient wool mill and the Casentino cloth, the rough and colorful fabric, often orange or green with characteristic knots, which has dressed generations of mountaineers and continues to be produced and appreciated. This artisanal vocation is also told in a museum dedicated to the art of wool. On the gastronomic level, the local cuisine reflects the mountain tradition of Casentino: mushrooms and chestnuts gathered in the nearby woods, cured meats, mountain pasture cheeses, and simple dishes based on legumes and cereals, designed for the cold of the mountain seasons.
