Introduction and location
Porto Azzurro stands on the eastern coast of the Island of Elba, in the heart of the Tuscan archipelago, in the province of Livorno. The town is nestled around a natural cove that forms one of the safest and busiest ports on the island, a crossroads for fishing boats, pleasure craft, and connections to the rest of the coast. The inhabited center, with its colorful facades and narrow streets descending towards the sea, coexists with a rocky promontory on which a large fortress stands out, an element that makes Porto Azzurro's profile recognizable from afar, both from the sea and from the surrounding hills.
History and origins
The settlement was founded in the 17th century under Spanish rule, when a mighty fortress was built to defend the bay, then called Porto Longone: a name the municipality kept for centuries before adopting its current name between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Spanish presence has left traces still visible in the urban layout, in the fortifications, and in a small Marian shrine commissioned by the Iberian governors on the nearby heights. Throughout the 20th century, the fortress changed function several times, while the village developed around port activities, fishing, and progressively, tourism linked to the island's beauty.
Nature and landscape
The territory of Porto Azzurro alternates stretches of rocky coast with small sandy coves, framed by the Mediterranean scrub that covers the hills behind. The sea, with tones ranging from emerald green to deep blue, has inspired the very name of the town and remains the dominant element of the landscape, along with the hilly profiles that slope down towards the bay. Paths and scenic roads connect the town to the nearby coves, offering views of the entire gulf and other coastal locations on Elba, in a still well-preserved natural setting despite the area's tourist vocation.
What to do and see
The heart of the visit is the walk along the harbor, enlivened by bars, shops, and moored boats, an ideal starting point for boat trips along the Elban coast. From below, you can admire the silhouette of the fortress on the promontory, which cannot be visited inside today but is evocative to observe in its squared profile above the town. Just outside the center, among the olive trees, stands the small Marian sanctuary of Spanish origin, a destination for walks and an annual pilgrimage. Nearby, some of Elba's most beloved beaches are easily accessible, ideal for a day at the sea after visiting the village.

The cuisine of Porto Azzurro reflects the dual maritime and agricultural soul of Elba: fresh fish dishes, seafood soups, and pasta with seafood alternate with peasant recipes based on vegetables, legumes, and local olive oil. The island's wines are not to be missed, with white and red labels produced in the terraced vineyards overlooking the sea, appreciated for centuries also thanks to port trade. Traditions linked to fishing and the sea remain alive in local festivals and in the daily life of the port, which remains the social and economic hub of the town.
