Introduction and location

Pontassieve is located in the Metropolitan City of Florence, about fifteen kilometers east of the capital, at the exact point where the Sieve river flows into the Arno: the name of the town also derives from this confluence of waters. Its position has always made it a natural transit point between Florence, the Val di Sieve, and the roads leading up to Casentino and Romagna. The municipal territory includes the inhabited valley floor and a crown of cultivated hills, which mark the gradual transition from the Florentine plain to the more rugged landscape of the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines.

History and origins

Cosa fare e cosa vedere

The historic center of Pontassieve is easily explored on foot, through narrow streets, intimate squares, and buildings that bear witness to the town's historical role as a market and transit point. From the town, itineraries depart towards the surrounding hills, ideal for those who want to walk or cycle among vineyards and olive groves with stops at farms and wineries. The proximity to Florence makes Pontassieve a convenient base for exploring the Val di Sieve and Chianti Rufina without sacrificing connections to the regional capital, while the riverbanks offer peaceful walks away from city traffic.

Flavors and traditions

The territory of Pontassieve falls within the production area of Chianti Rufina, one of the most famous Tuscan red wines, produced on the hills surrounding the town along with quality extra virgin olive oil. Local cuisine follows Tuscan peasant tradition, made up of simple dishes linked to the products of the land and a long-standing custom of working in the fields and vineyards. Markets and shops in the center still offer wine, oil, and short-chain seasonal products today, keeping alive the direct link between the town and the surrounding countryside.
