Introduction and location
Poggibonsi rises in the province of Siena, in Tuscany, at the crossroads between the Val d'Elsa and the first foothills of the Sienese Chianti. Its position, halfway between Florence and Siena, has made it for centuries a mandatory passage point along the Via Francigena, the ancient road that connected Northern Europe to Rome. Today the municipality is an active center of plain and hill, surrounded by countryside cultivated with vines and olives, with the Elsa river flowing nearby, marking the natural border of the valley. From here, San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence are easily reachable.
History and origins
The origins of Poggibonsi date back to the Middle Ages, when the village, then called Poggio Bonizio, developed as a strategic stronghold contested between Florence and Siena for control of the Val d'Elsa. In the 16th century, Cosimo I de' Medici had the Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale built on the hill, an imposing defensive structure that still dominates the town. The city paid a very high price during World War II, when the bombings of 1944 destroyed a large part of the historic center, which was later rebuilt after the war. This complex past explains the modern appearance of many city streets, alongside older testimonies that have survived in the surrounding areas.
Nature and landscape
The territory of Poggibonsi extends between the plain crossed by the Elsa river and the hills that lead to the landscape of the Sienese Chianti, made up of rows of vines, olive groves, and coppice woods. The rural areas around the inhabited center offer country paths suitable for walks and bike rides, with views ranging from the clay badlands typical of the area to the profiles of the hills of San Gimignano in the distance. It is a living agricultural landscape, still linked today to the production of wine and oil, which changes color with the seasons and represents one of the most authentic aspects of the Tuscan countryside.

The center of Poggibonsi invites you for a walk among the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo, the Praetorian Palace, and the streets of the historic core rebuilt after the war. Climbing towards the hill, you reach the Medici Fortress of Poggio Imperiale, from which you can enjoy a wide panorama of the Val d'Elsa. A short distance from the town is the Convent of San Lucchese, a religious complex immersed in greenery with a cloister and sacred artworks, a destination for visits and moments of peace. Itineraries to nearby villages also depart from Poggibonsi, making the city an excellent base for exploring Tuscany less frequented by mass tourism.
Flavors and traditions
The cuisine of Poggibonsi is rooted in Tuscan peasant tradition, made up of simple dishes such as ribollita, crostini with chicken livers, and grilled meats, accompanied by local unsalted bread. The surrounding hills, on the edge of the Sienese Chianti, produce quality wine and extra virgin olive oil, protagonists of the tables and city markets. Historically, Poggibonsi was also an important center for woodworking and furniture production, a craft and industrial activity that has marked the city's economic identity alongside agriculture. Local festivals and markets keep this dual soul, rural and productive, alive.
