Mulazzo is a small municipality in the province of Massa-Carrara, in the heart of Lunigiana, the historic land of passage between Tuscany, Liguria, and Emilia. Surrounded by hamlets scattered among the Apennine reliefs, Mulazzo retains the secluded atmosphere of Tuscan mountain villages, far from the most beaten tourist routes but rich in history, nature, and genuine gastronomic traditions.
History and origins
The origins of Mulazzo date back to the Middle Ages, when the village became one of the fiefs of the powerful Malaspina family, who long dominated Lunigiana, dividing it into branches and minor domains. The remains of the Malaspina castle still stand on the hill of the village, a testament to the strategic role Mulazzo played in controlling the Apennine communication routes. A local tradition also links the village to Dante Alighieri's stay in Lunigiana in 1306, when the poet was a guest of the Malaspina marquises on a peace mission between local families, an episode still remembered today in the village's memory.
