Monterotondo Marittimo is located in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscany, in the heart of the Metalliferous Hills, a hilly area that owes its name to the mineral deposits exploited since ancient times. The name of the town, which can be misleading, does not indicate a coastal location: the inhabited center is located inland, at a distance from the sea, surrounded by chestnut and oak woods. The municipal territory includes several hamlets scattered among the hills and borders other municipalities in the geothermal area, a unique area in Italy for the intensity of phenomena related to underground heat, long exploited for energy production.
History and origins
The origins of Monterotondo Marittimo date back to the Middle Ages, when the village developed as a fortified settlement on the heights, protecting the routes that crossed the Colline Metallifere. Like many centers in the area, its history is linked to the exploitation of mineral deposits and, in more recent times, to the discovery and industrial use of borax fumaroles, the natural steam jets that characterize the subsoil. Over the centuries, the town has experienced alternating phases, passing under the control of various lordships and subsequently of the Republic of Siena, before becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and, finally, of a united Italy.

The landscape of Monterotondo Marittimo is dominated by wooded hills, where chestnut trees, oaks, and Mediterranean scrub alternate with clearings and small streams.
