Introduction and location
Montemurlo is located in the province of Prato, along the connecting belt between the Prato-Pistoia plain and the first slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Its position, halfway between Prato and Pistoia, has historically made it a transit and territorial control point. The municipality includes a hilly historic core, dominated by the fortress, and more recent hamlets developed on the plain, where a large part of the productive activities are concentrated. The contrast between the upper part, more compact and panoramic, and the lower part, more dynamic and industrial, is one of the distinctive features of Montemurlo.
History and origins
The origins of Montemurlo date back to the Middle Ages, when a fortified fortress was built on the hill to control the routes between the Prato plain and the Pistoia mountains. The castle was long contested between local families and cities, until it became known for the battle of 1537, when the troops of Cosimo I de' Medici defeated a group of Florentine exiles who had taken refuge within these walls, a decisive episode in the history of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In the following centuries, the village maintained an agricultural role, and then grew along with the Prato textile industry, which transformed the economy and urban fabric in the 20th century.
Nature and landscape
The territory of Montemurlo transitions in a short space from cultivated plains to wooded hills, offering varied and well-preserved landscapes. The Monteferrato area, which the municipality shares with neighboring territories, is characterized by rocky outcrops of ophiolitic origin, covered by vegetation typical of the Mediterranean scrub interspersed with holm oak and pine woods. On the gentler slopes, olive groves, vineyards, and small cultivated plots alternate, while the hilly paths offer wide views of the Prato plain and, on clearer days, of the surrounding mountain ranges. It is a still very authentic rural landscape, appreciated by those seeking quiet walks away from the main tourist flows.

The heart of visits to Montemurlo is the hill on which the fortress stands, from which you can overlook the entire plain below and from which you can easily grasp the strategic value that the place had in past centuries. Strolling through the streets of the small historic center, with views of the landscape and secluded corners, allows you to breathe the atmosphere of an ancient Tuscan hilltop village. Those who love walking can continue towards the Monteferrato area, with hiking trails of varying lengths suitable for families and more experienced walkers. The lower part of the municipality, more modern, instead preserves evidence of the industrial vocation linked to the Prato textile district, of which Montemurlo is an integral part.

Montemurlo's cuisine is rooted in Tuscan peasant tradition, made up of simple dishes and genuine ingredients: extra virgin olive oil produced on the surrounding hills, unsalted bread, vegetable and legume soups, grilled or stewed meats.
