Introduction and location
Monte Argentario is a promontory in Tuscan Maremma, in the province of Grosseto, which juts out into the Tyrrhenian Sea almost like an island. It is connected to the mainland by two strips of sand, the Giannella and Feniglia tombolos, which enclose the Orbetello lagoon. The municipal territory includes the seaside villages of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, as well as a hilly hinterland covered with Mediterranean scrub. Its position, suspended between the open sea and the lagoon, makes it one of the most recognizable coastal destinations in southern Tuscany.
History and origins
The history of Monte Argentario is linked to the sea and its defenses. After coming under the control of Siena and then the Orsini family, in the 16th century the promontory became part of the Spanish State of the Presidi, a possession of the Spanish crown in central Italy. To protect the coasts from raids and pirates, imposing fortifications were built, still visible today in Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano. It was precisely in Porto Ercole that the painter Caravaggio died in 1610, during a return journey to Rome, an episode that remains one of the best-known chapters related to this territory.
Nature and landscape
The landscape of Monte Argentario alternates wild rocky coasts and hidden coves, the famous 'cale', with expanses of pine forest along the sandy tombolos. The Feniglia tombolo is a protected natural area, accessible on foot or by bicycle among centuries-old maritime pines and dunes. The Orbetello lagoon, separated from the open sea by the tombolos, is a wetland oasis of international importance for migratory bird stopovers. The hilly hinterland, covered in Mediterranean scrub, is crossed by scenic roads that offer glimpses of the Tuscan archipelago.
What to do and see
Among the most beloved activities in Monte Argentario are the walks along the small harbors of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, enlivened by fishing boats and pleasure craft. Ferries to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, ideal destinations for day trips, depart from Porto Santo Stefano. Sea lovers can enjoy sailing, diving, and snorkeling in the clear waters of the coves, while those who prefer the mainland can follow the paths leading up to the panoramic viewpoints of the promontory. The Spanish fortifications, visible while walking through the two centers, add a historical touch to every visit.
Flavors and traditions
The cuisine of Monte Argentario reflects its seafaring vocation: fresh fish dishes, seafood soups, and the 'palamita' (a type of tuna), once caught in large quantities off the promontory, remain protagonists of local tables. The fishing tradition, still alive in the two ports, intertwines with the agricultural tradition of the hinterland, where vineyards grow, producing Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario, a white wine with a controlled designation of origin. Festivals and village fairs mark the summer, celebrating the centuries-old bond between the community and the sea that surrounds it.
