Massarosa is located in the province of Lucca, in Tuscany, in the hilly area that separates the Versilia plain from the first heights behind the coast. The municipal territory, quite extensive, includes numerous hamlets scattered among hills cultivated with olive trees and the plain of Lake Massaciuccoli, a body of water shared with neighboring municipalities. Massarosa borders Viareggio and the Tyrrhenian coast, Camaiore towards the Apuan Alps, and Lucca towards the hinterland, thus occupying a hinge position between the sea, the hills, and cities of art, well connected by the road network of historic Versilia.
History and origins
The origins of Massarosa date back to the Middle Ages, when the territory, located on the border between the Republic of Lucca and the areas of Pisan influence, was repeatedly contested for its strategic position between the hills and the lake plain. The numerous hamlets that make up the municipality were born as small fortified nuclei or parish churches scattered on the heights, to defend the communication routes and crops. In the following centuries, the territory followed the fortunes of the Republic of Lucca, maintaining an economy linked to agriculture, olive growing, and the exploitation of the resources of Lake Massaciuccoli, before being unified into a single municipality in modern times.
Nature and landscape
The landscape of Massarosa is marked by the contrast between the hills covered with olive groves and woods and the humid plain of Lake Massaciuccoli, with its surrounding marshland, which represents one of the most important wetland areas in Tuscany.
