Where is Licciana Nardi located
Licciana Nardi is situated in Lunigiana, the historic borderland between Tuscany, Liguria, and Emilia, in the province of Massa-Carrara. The municipal territory extends along the valley of the Taverone stream, a tributary of the Magra river, and is composed of numerous hamlets scattered among the Apennine reliefs. The landscape alternates between perched stone villages, terraced cultivations, and wide wooded slopes, in a rural and tranquil setting. Its location, not far from the main communication routes of Lunigiana, makes it a convenient stop for exploring the Tuscan-Emilian hinterland away from mass coastal tourism.
History and origins of the village
The territory was for a long time part of the feudal possessions of the Malaspina family, who during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance erected fortifications to defend the transit routes between Tuscany and the Po Valley, including the castle in the hamlet of Terrarossa and the fortress of Comano. The current name of the municipality, once simply Licciana, was integrated with the surname Nardi in memory of Anacarsi Nardi, a Risorgimento patriot originally from the area, who fell in 1844 in the expedition of the Bandiera brothers in Calabria. This double root, feudal and Risorgimento, can still be seen today in the historical layout of the hamlets and in the local toponymy.
Nature and landscape
The landscape of Licciana Nardi is dominated by centuries-old chestnut groves that cover the hilly and mountainous slopes, typical of the entire Lunigiana area, along with mixed woods of oaks and beeches as one ascends towards the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The Taverone stream flows through the municipal territory, carving small gorges and wetlands, while a dense network of paths and mule tracks connects the hamlets, offering opportunities for walks and excursions in contact with nature. In autumn, the woods offer intense colors and are a destination for collecting chestnuts and porcini mushrooms, activities still deeply felt by the local community.
What to do and what to see
Among the most interesting experiences is the visit to the Malaspina castle of Terrarossa, an example of Renaissance fortified architecture, and to the remains of the Comano fortress, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the valley. The center of Licciana preserves a medieval layout with alleys, stone portals, and small spaces linked to local memory, while the other hamlets of the municipality allow you to discover a still little-known rural landscape. Trekking enthusiasts can follow the trails of the Taverone valley and the connections to the Apennine ridges, suitable for both short walks and more challenging high-altitude excursions.

The cuisine of Licciana Nardi is rooted in the peasant tradition of Lunigiana, where the chestnut has been a staple food for centuries: chestnut flour is used to make bread, sweets, and torta d'erbi, while testaroli and panigacci, cooked on traditional griddles, are served with pesto or local cheeses. There are also porcini mushrooms, chestnut honey, and artisanal cured meats, often linked to small family farms. During autumn, the chestnut harvesting season is an occasion for village festivals and fairs that liven up the hamlets, keeping recipes and gestures passed down from generation to generation alive.
