Introduction and location
Gavorrano is located in the northern part of the province of Grosseto, in Maremma, at the foot of the Colline Metallifere and a short distance from the Gulf of Follonica and the Tyrrhenian coast. The municipal territory includes the capital, perched on a hilly relief, and several hamlets scattered between countryside and woods, such as Bagno di Gavorrano, Caldana, Filare and Giuncarico. This position, straddling the hilly hinterland and the coast, makes Gavorrano a convenient starting point both for those seeking the sea and for those who want to explore the inland landscapes of Maremma.
History and origins
The origins of Gavorrano date back to the Middle Ages, when the village developed under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family, lords of a large part of southern Maremma, before coming under the influence of Siena and finally the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Evidence of this past are the remains of the fortress on the hilltop, around which the historic settlement developed. From the 19th century onwards, the territory entered a new phase linked to the mining of pyrite, which for over a century characterized the economy and social life of Gavorrano, until the closure of the mines in 1981.
Nature and landscape
The landscape of Gavorrano alternates between gentle hills covered in Mediterranean scrub, olive groves, and vineyards with harsher stretches linked to its mining past, with ancient quarries and rocky outcrops still visible in the territory. From the highest points of the village, the view extends over the Maremma plain to the sea, with the Gulf of Follonica just a few kilometers away. The proximity between the hills and the coast allows for a mix of nature walks, trails through the woods of the Colline Metallifere, and days at the beach, in a setting that is still less crowded compared to other areas of coastal Tuscany.

The historic center of Gavorrano, with its uphill alleys and the remains of the medieval fortress, can be visited on foot in a few hours, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The Gavorrano Mining Museum Park tells the story of pyrite extraction through tunnels and educational paths, while the former quarry transformed into a natural amphitheater, the Teatro delle Rocce, hosts concerts and open-air performances during the summer. The hamlets of the territory, such as Caldana with its rural layout, offer a more intimate image of the inner Maremma, complementary to the appeal of the nearby coast.
Flavors and traditions
Gavorrano's cuisine is rooted in the Maremma peasant tradition, made up of simple dishes and local ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, homemade bread, legumes, and game, particularly wild boar, the protagonist of typical sauces and cured meats. In the surrounding hills, vines are cultivated, producing wines that fit into the winemaking tradition of the Grosseto Maremma, while chestnuts and forest products enrich the autumn cuisine. The trattorias in the village and hamlets still offer recipes passed down from generation to generation, often linked to the cycle of the seasons.
