Fivizzano: between Lunigiana and the Apuan Alps
Fivizzano is located in the upper Lunigiana, the historic land of passage between Tuscany, Liguria, and Emilia, in the province of Massa-Carrara. The town is situated in a hilly basin crossed by the Rosaro stream, not far from the Aulella river, a tributary of the Magra, and dominated in the background by the peaks of the Apuan Alps. Its historically strategic position for controlling the communication routes between the sea and the Apennines made Fivizzano an important administrative center since the Middle Ages, a role confirmed by the vast municipal territory which includes dozens of small villages and hamlets scattered on the surrounding hills.
History and origins: the little Florence of the Medici
La storia di Fivizzano è legata a lungo al dominio della Repubblica Fiorentina e poi del Granducato di Toscana, che governò questo avamposto di confine dal Quattrocento in poi: da qui il soprannome di 'piccola Firenze della Lunigiana', ancora oggi usato per descrivere l'impronta urbanistica del centro storico. Fivizzano vanta inoltre un primato culturale importante: nel 1471 vi fu attiva una delle prime tipografie a caratteri mobili della Toscana, un'eredità che il paese ricorda con orgoglio. Il territorio ha però conosciuto anche pagine dolorose, come il terremoto della Lunigiana del 1920 e le tragiche vicende della Seconda guerra mondiale che colpirono duramente alcune frazioni del comune.

Il paesaggio di Fivizzano alterna dolci colline coltivate a boschi di castagno e faggio che salgono verso le vette rocciose delle Alpi Apuane, celebri in tutta Italia per le cave di marmo e per i sentieri escursionistici di ogni livello. Just outside the capital stands the Verrucola castle, an ancient Malaspina fortress that dominates the valley from above and testifies to the defensive role of the territory in past centuries. The hamlets scattered on the hills, each with its own church and stone nucleus, deserve repeated stops for those who want to discover Lunigiana away from the most well-known routes, perhaps combining cultural visits with walks in the surrounding nature.
