History and origins
The origins of Filattiera date back to the early Middle Ages, when the village became a strategic stronghold along the Via Francigena. The name itself, of probable Byzantine origin, recalls the function of guarding and controlling the territory exercised in the Lombard era. In the following centuries, the town entered the orbit of the Malaspina family, who built a castle there to defend the valley, which can still be seen today in its remains on the hill overlooking the inhabited area. Not far away stands the Pieve di Sorano, one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Lunigiana, a testament to the religious and civil importance achieved by the territory.
