Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia combines a fortified village of medieval origin with a lively tourist port. Among pine forests, beaches, and the nearby Diaccia Botrona lagoon, it is one of the most beloved coastal destinations in the Tuscan Maremma for its nature, sea, and food and wine tradition.

Η ιστορία του/της Castiglione della Pescaia

Introduction and location

Castiglione della Pescaia is located on the Maremma coast, in the province of Grosseto, at the mouth of the Bruna canal which connects the town to the sea. The historic center climbs up a hill overlooking the port, while the rest of the inhabited area stretches along the sandy coastline. Its location, between the open sea and a formerly marshy inland plain, has made the town a natural meeting point for maritime activities, agriculture, and seaside tourism, today among the most appreciated in coastal Tuscany.

History and origins

The origins of the settlement date back to the Middle Ages, when a fortification was built on the hill to defend the coast and the port below, in a territory long contested between maritime powers and Tuscan lordships. Over the centuries, the fortified village consolidated as a defensive outpost, while a small fishing village grew at its feet. Only with the reclamation of the surrounding plain, started in modern times, did the area cease to be marshy and unhealthy, paving the way for the agricultural and tourist development that characterizes the territory today.

Nature and landscape

The municipal territory encompasses very diverse landscapes: the sandy beaches fringed by the Tombolo pine forest, a vast strip of maritime pines separating the sea from the hinterland, and the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, a remnant of the ancient Maremma marshes, now a refuge for numerous species of water birds. Behind the city, the first hills of the Maremma rise, cultivated with vineyards and olive groves. This mosaic of sea, pine forest, wetland, and hills makes Castiglione a privileged destination for those who love nature as well as seaside life.

What to do and what to see

A walk through the historic village allows you to climb through alleys and staircases to the fortress that dominates the port, with views ranging from the sea to the Maremma hills. At the foot of the hill, the tourist port enlivens evening strolls among boats and restaurants. The beaches, largely equipped but also free towards the pine forest, are suitable for seaside days, while birdwatching enthusiasts can dedicate time to Diaccia Botrona. The nearby hamlet of Le Rocchette, with its coastal tower, offers a further, more secluded bathing stop.

Flavors and traditions

The local cuisine reflects the meeting between the sea and the Maremma countryside: fresh fish dishes from the port are combined with meats, cheeses, and vegetables from the agricultural hinterland. The vineyards on the surrounding hills produce Tuscan Maremma wines, often served in the trattorias of the historic center and the seafront. Local extra virgin olive oil and garden produce are also abundant, forming the basis of a simple gastronomic tradition linked to the seasons. In summer, the town also comes alive with markets and convivial occasions related to local products.
