Introduction and location
Castelfranco Piandiscò is a municipality in the province of Arezzo, born in 2014 from the merger of the two ancient villages of Castelfranco di Sopra and Pian di Scò. It is located in the heart of the upper Valdarno, the valley crossed by the Arno River, at the foot of the Pratomagno massif which separates the Valdarno from the Casentino. The municipal territory alternates cultivated valley floors with vineyards and olive groves on the wooded slopes of the mountain, offering a typically Tuscan landscape made up of gentle hills, stone villages, and wide green horizons.
History and origins
The history of Castelfranco Piandiscò dates back to the Middle Ages. Castelfranco di Sopra was founded in 1299 by the Florentine Republic as a 'new town', a settlement planned according to a regular urban layout, with parallel streets and a defensive structure designed to control the valley. Pian di Scò, spread along the slopes of Pratomagno, instead preserves an older fabric linked to rural life and the presence of monastic communities. Near the territory stands the Badia di Soffena, an ancient Vallombrosan abbey that testifies to the religious and economic importance of this area during the late Middle Ages.

Pratomagno dominates the landscape of Castelfranco Piandiscò with its grassy ridges and beech and chestnut woods that cover its slopes.
