The municipal territory includes a small capital and numerous hamlets scattered among the hills that separate the Apuan Alps from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. This location, far from major traffic arteries, has preserved a rural landscape made up of chestnut woods, terraces, and stone villages, a destination for slow and nature tourism rather than mass tourism.
History and origins
Come gran parte della Lunigiana, il territorio di Casola in Lunigiana fu a lungo conteso tra poteri vescovili e signorie locali, per poi entrare nell'orbita dei marchesi Malaspina, che governarono a lungo questa regione di confine tra Toscana, Liguria ed Emilia. Le numerose frazioni del comune conservano tracce di questo passato feudale in torri, case-torre e nuclei fortificati sorti a controllo delle vie di comunicazione tra la costa e l'entroterra. Solo in epoca più recente l'area è stata annessa amministrativamente alla Toscana, mantenendo però una cultura e un dialetto fortemente legati all'identità lunigianese.
