Introduction and location

Campiglia Marittima stands on a hill in the Val di Cornia, in the province of Livorno, just a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian coast and the Gulf of Piombino. Its elevated position offers sweeping views over cultivated hills down to the sea, with the island of Elba visible on clear days. The municipal territory also includes the spa hamlet of Venturina Terme in the plain below. This dual character, both hilltop and coastal, makes Campiglia a natural base for visitors exploring the Etruscan Coast who want a genuine link to the Tuscan hinterland.

History and origins

Campiglia's origins go back to Etruscan and Roman times, when the area was already being exploited for its copper, silver and iron deposits. The medieval village developed from around the year 1000 under local noble families and later the Republic of Pisa, which strengthened its defences with walls and a fortress. In later centuries the town came under Florentine influence, while retaining the medieval urban fabric that still defines its historic centre today, with stone alleys, gateways and houses built against the old town walls.

Nature and landscape

The landscape around Campiglia alternates chestnut and holm-oak woods, Mediterranean scrubland and broad stretches of olive groves and vineyards sloping down toward the Val di Cornia plain. The metal-bearing hills surrounding the town hold old mining tunnels that are now the focus of nature and heritage trails. Toward the coast the territory opens onto the Gulf of Piombino, while the hinterland offers hiking and cycling routes through scrubland and centuries-old olive groves, with views combining green hills and blue sea.

What to do and see

The historic centre of Campiglia is best explored on foot, among medieval walls, the Palazzo Pretorio and the fortress overlooking the town, with views that suddenly open onto the countryside and the sea. Just outside the village lies the San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park, which tells the long story of local mining through tunnels, former industrial buildings and archaeological areas. Nearby Venturina Terme offers thermal spa waters, while the wider area is well suited to trips linking neighbouring villages, coastal beaches and the Val di Cornia wine routes.

Flavours and traditions

Campiglia's cuisine reflects the typical Val di Cornia meeting of hills and sea: extra virgin olive oil, red and white Val di Cornia denomination wines, chestnuts gathered in the nearby woods and garden produce sit alongside fish dishes brought in from the coast close by. The village trattorias serve simple, seasonal recipes, often paired with local cured meats and cheeses. Village festivals and farmers' markets, common throughout the Val di Cornia, remain the best way to get to know the area's produce and culinary traditions firsthand.
