Bagnone is located in Lunigiana, a historic border region north of the province of Massa-Carrara, between the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps. The town stands along the banks of the Bagnone stream, a tributary of the Magra river, in a green valley divided into numerous small hamlets scattered on the surrounding hills. Its secluded position, away from major tourist flows, makes it an authentic destination, appreciated by those seeking rural and mountain Tuscany, far from the sea and the most beaten paths, but easily reachable from nearby Villafranca in Lunigiana and Pontremoli.
History and origins
Le origini di Bagnone risalgono al Medioevo, quando il borgo si sviluppò come presidio fortificato a controllo della vallata, in un'area a lungo contesa tra le famiglie signorili della Lunigiana. Come gran parte del territorio circostante, passò sotto l'influenza della famiglia Malaspina, che vi esercitò per secoli il proprio dominio feudale lasciando un'impronta ancora visibile nell'assetto urbanistico del paese. Il castello che sovrasta l'abitato testimonia questo passato di fortificazioni e controllo del territorio, tipico di una regione di confine attraversata da vie di comunicazione strategiche tra la Toscana, la Liguria e l'Emilia.
