A city of great minds
Arezzo boasts Etruscan and Roman origins and a lively Middle Ages, when it was a free commune and an important cultural centre. It is the city that gave birth to extraordinary figures: Giorgio Vasari, painter, architect and the first art historian; the poet Francesco Petrarch; and Guido d'Arezzo, the monk who invented modern musical notation. This density of talent left a deep legacy, visible in the palaces, churches and museums of the city, which today preserves an elegant, well-kept historic centre set on the San Donato hill.
Piazza Grande and the Saracen Joust
The scenic heart of the city is Piazza Grande, with its unmistakable slope, surrounded by buildings of different eras, from the Vasari Loggias to the Romanesque apse of the Pieve di Santa Maria and the medieval palaces with towers. Here, twice a year, the Saracen Joust takes place, a spectacular historical re-enactment in costume in which the knights of the city districts compete by striking the target of the Buratto with a lance. The square also hosts the famous Antiques Fair, among the most important in Italy, which enlivens the centre every month.
Piero della Francesca's frescoes
Arezzo's most precious treasure is kept in the Basilica of San Francesco: the fresco cycle of the Legend of the True Cross, painted by Piero della Francesca in the fifteenth century, is one of the absolute masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, admired for its use of light, perspective and the solemn composure of its figures. The city also preserves the Pieve di Santa Maria, a splendid example of Romanesque, the Cathedral with stained glass and works of art, and the Bacci Chapel. An artistic heritage that makes Arezzo an unmissable stop for art lovers.
The city of gold and Vasari
Arezzo is one of the world's leading centres of goldsmithing, with a tradition of gold working that fuels an important industrial and artisan district. The Vasari House, a residence frescoed by the artist himself, offers an intimate look at the master's life, while the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art gathers precious collections. Cinema made the city famous thanks to Roberto Benigni's film "Life Is Beautiful", filmed among its squares. A discreet charm that is discovered by strolling without haste.
Arezzo's flavours and traditions
Arezzo's cuisine is the honest one of inland Tuscany: hand-made pici, ribollita, acquacotta, the meats of the Val di Chiana, home of the famous Chianina breed from which the Florentine steak comes, and cured meats served with unsalted bread and excellent oil. The surroundings offer splendid landscapes, from the Casentino with its woods and monasteries to the Valdichiana and the Valtiberina. Between art, craftsmanship and good food, Arezzo is an ideal gateway to an authentic and still uncrowded Tuscany.
