The Tuscan Archipelago is a group of seven islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, protected within Italy's largest marine national park. Elba, the largest and best-known, along with Capraia, Giglio, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri, and Gorgona, encloses Medici fortresses, Napoleonic history, wild coastlines, and a Mediterranean table made of wine, fish, and mountain flavors.

Geography and territory

The Tuscan Archipelago is a group of seven islands scattered in the Tyrrhenian Sea between the Tuscan coast and Corsica, within the National Park of the same name established in 1996, the largest protected marine area in Europe. The island of Elba, the largest in the group and the third largest in Italy by surface area after Sicily and Sardinia, is located off the coast of Piombino, from which it is a few kilometers away by ferry. The other islands - Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio, Giannutri, and Gorgona - are staggered along the Tuscan coast up to the border with Lazio, each with its own geographical and historical characteristics.

History and identity

The name Elba probably derives from the Etruscan term for 'iron', a mineral extracted on the island since antiquity and which has marked its economy for millennia, from the Etruscan smelting furnaces to the mines of Rio until their definitive closure in 1981. The island experienced successive dominations - Etruscans, Romans, Pisans, Genoese, Spaniards - and Medici fortifications built in the 16th century to defend against Barbary incursions. The most famous chapter remains the exile of Napoleon Bonaparte, who ruled the island as sovereign from May 1814 to February 1815, leaving visible traces in Portoferraio at Villa dei Mulini and Villa di San Martino.

Landscape and nature

The archipelago's territory alternates between rugged coastlines, rocky coves, and long beaches of light sand with a mountainous hinterland: on Elba, Monte Capanne exceeds 1000 meters and dominates the western side, reachable by the historic cable car from Marciana. The National Park protects holm oak and chestnut woods, Mediterranean scrub, granite coasts, and seabeds among the richest in biodiversity in the Mediterranean, a destination for diving and snorkeling. Capraia preserves a rugged volcanic landscape, while Giglio alternates the scrub of Giglio Campese with sheer cliffs overlooking the sea on the eastern side, with clear waters protected by the archipelago's currents.

Villages and places to see

Portoferraio, the Elban capital, is gathered around the historic port dominated by the Medici fortresses of Forte Falcone and Forte Stella. Capoliveri, perched on a hill, preserves a center of mining origin with alleys and small squares; Porto Azzurro overlooks a bay protected by the Forte di San Giacomo. Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba tell the mining history among reddish hematite rocks; Marciana Marina and Marciana, at the foot of Monte Capanne, and Campo nell'Elba, with its beaches, complete the Elban picture. Capraia Isola, with its small port village, and Isola del Giglio, between Giglio Porto and Giglio Castello, remain more isolated and authentic destinations in the archipelago.

Food and traditions

The archipelago's cuisine combines sea and land flavors: local fish is paired with peasant dishes such as gurguglione, Elban caponata of vegetables, and schiaccia briaca, a dessert based on raisins, nuts, and typical wine for festive occasions. Viticulture has ancient roots on the terraced slopes of Elba, today recognized by the Elba DOC denominations, for white and red wines, and Aleatico dell'Elba DOCG, a sweet passito made from aromatic grapes cultivated almost exclusively on the island. Honey, oil, and artisanal fishing products are also part of the local gastronomic traditions, often showcased at seasonal festivals and markets in the archipelago's towns.

Not to be missed

  • Villa dei Mulini and Villa di San Martino, Napoleon's residences in Portoferraio
  • Forte Falcone and Forte Stella, Medici fortresses above Portoferraio's harbour
  • Monte Capanne and the cable car ride from Marciana
  • The beaches of Sansone, Fetovaia and Cavoli
  • The hilltop village of Giglio Castello and the Giglio Campese coast
