A plateau between Trento and Valsugana
The Pinè Plateau extends east of Trento, on a shelf located at about 1000 meters above sea level, between the Adige Valley and Valsugana, at the foot of Monte Piné and not far from the Marzola. It is reachable in a few minutes by car from the provincial capital, of which it has always been a holiday destination due to its cool climate and proximity to the city. The territory mainly includes the municipalities of Baselga di Pinè and Bedollo, as well as the historic hamlets of Faida, Miola, Rizzolaga, Vigo, Regnana, and Bedollo itself, forming a mosaic of small centers distributed around the lake basin.
Identity and history of the plateau
The history of Pinè is rooted in the rural and silvo-pastoral economy of Trentino, with ancient mountain huts, sawmills, and small workshops linked to the water of the lakes. In the 20th century, the plateau developed a tourist vocation, first as a summer holiday resort for families from Trentino and then as a center for winter sports, thanks above all to the tradition of speed skating linked to the ice rink in Baselga di Pinè. The Sanctuary of Pinè, a pilgrimage destination, also testifies to the deep popular religiosity that has accompanied the life of the plateau communities for centuries.
Landscape and nature between woods and lakes
The landscape of the Pinè Plateau is dominated by coniferous forests, meadows for mowing, and the two main bodies of water, Lake Serraia and Lake delle Piazze, surrounded by flat paths suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. All around, paths open up towards the Marzola and towards the woods that gently rise in altitude, frequented by hikers and mountain bike enthusiasts. The mild summer climate makes the plateau a pleasant cool alternative compared to the valley floor, while in winter the lakes and snowy meadows create a quiet landscape, ideal for outdoor skating and snowshoeing.
Villages and places to see
Baselga di Pinè is the main center of the plateau, with shops, services, and the historic ice rink that has hosted athletes and competitions of international level. Bedollo, not far away, retains a more secluded setting among stone houses and a parish church, a starting point for walks towards the surrounding woods. The Sanctuary of Pinè, dedicated to the Madonna, stands in a secluded position and is a destination for devotion and short visits even for those not on a pilgrimage. Around the two lakes develop the most frequented walks by visitors, with rest stops, equipped beaches, and views of the plateau.
Food and wine and local traditions
The cuisine of the Altopiano di Pinè reflects its mountain vocation: mountain pasture cheeses, Trentino cured meats, porcini mushrooms picked in the nearby woods, and local honey accompany polenta-based dishes and canederli typical of the Trentino tradition. Blueberries and small berries, grown and harvested on the plateau, are among the most characteristic products of the area, often offered in jams and desserts. In the summer months, the mountain pastures open to visitors offering direct tastings of fresh and aged cheeses, while local events still celebrate the seasonal rhythms of work in the woods and pastures.
