Between the Piave and the Prealps
Segusino lies in the foothills of the Treviso area, close to the border with the province of Belluno, in a territory where the last spurs of the Prealps descend toward the plain. The Piave river crosses the settlement from north to south, partly marking the municipal boundary, and has always been both a resource and a threat for Segusino, capable of sudden flooding but also of sustaining agriculture and the small mills once common along its banks. The municipal landscape alternates the river plain with cultivated hills, in a transitional setting between the nearby Belluno mountains and the vine-covered hills of the Marca Trevigiana.
From Medieval Origins to the First World War
The first historical record of Segusino dates back to 983, when Bishop Rodolfo donated this land to the monastery of Santi Felice e Fortunato of Vicenza, marking the beginning of a long history tied to religious institutions and the management of agricultural land. Many centuries later, during the First World War, Segusino lived through a dramatic and unexpected chapter of its history: following the defeat at Caporetto and the retreat of the Italian army to the Piave line, the village suddenly found itself caught up in the front, an event that left deep traces in the community's collective memory, still nurtured today through monuments, memorial trails and local initiatives.
The Hermitage above the Piave
One of Segusino's most evocative places is the old hermitage overhanging the Piave river, which during the First World War was used as a position by the enemy army, given its strategic control over the valley. Abandoned and left to decay through much of the 20th century, the hermitage was restored in the 1990s thanks to the work of local volunteers, who gave the community back its historical and symbolic value. Today the trail leading to the hermitage, often called the Anello del Romit, named after the hermits who lived there in past centuries, is one of the municipality's most appreciated hiking routes, combining nature, historical memory and a direct view over the river.
The Churches of Segusino and Milies
The municipal territory preserves several religious buildings of interest. In the main town stands the church of Santa Lucia Vergine e Martire, the religious reference point for the main community. In the hamlet of Milies stands the church of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, while more isolated, reachable along part of the Anello del Romit, is the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, near which generations of hermits lived until the 19th century. This group of religious buildings, spread between the valley floor and the more isolated parts of the territory, tells the story of a community deeply tied to faith and mountain life, one that has kept even its most marginal places alive over time.
The Narcissus Bloom and the Hamlet of Stramare
Among Segusino's most distinctive experiences is the blooming of wild narcissus, which between spring and early summer covers the meadows of the plain and the Milies hillside in white, starting from mid-April: a simple but captivating natural spectacle that draws walkers and nature lovers. Not far away lies Stramare, one of the municipality's historic hamlets, now completely abandoned but of a beauty hard to put into words, its stone houses now overtaken by vegetation. Stramare well represents the fate of many small mountain settlements in the area, depopulated over the course of the 20th century but still able to quietly tell the story of the life that once animated them.
