History and origins
The monument that best tells the story of Ponzano Veneto is Villa Minelli, built in the early seventeenth century by the Venetian Minelli family, merchants of Bergamo origin who grew wealthy trading at Rialto and rose to the rank of Venetian patricians in 1650. The complex, which includes the manor villa, two barchesse and a small chapel, was in poor condition when it was bought by the Benetton family in 1969. Restoration, entrusted to architects Afra and Tobia Scarpa and carried out in two phases between 1971 and 1990, transformed Villa Minelli into the group's historic headquarters, a landmark for the company from the mid-1980s onward.
What to see and main sights
Villa Minelli, with its seventeenth-century architecture skilfully restored in a contemporary key, remains the municipality's emblem, an example of how a historic building can be reinterpreted while keeping its architectural value intact. The municipal territory preserves other villas and farmhouses typical of the Treviso countryside, along with small hamlet churches that bear witness to the landscape's rural layers.
Nature and surroundings
The countryside around Ponzano Veneto forms part of the Marca Trevigiana, a lowland landscape dotted with minor waterways, tree rows and crops, a short distance from the first Prosecco hills rising to the north. It is well suited to cycling routes among villas and countryside, with Treviso and its historic centre reachable within minutes.
Food, wine and local produce
The municipality falls within the wider Prosecco DOC area, produced on the Treviso hills just to the north, while the local table follows Marca Trevigiana tradition, with Treviso's red radicchio among the area's most distinctive products. Proximity to Treviso also offers a wide choice of dining rooted in mainland Venetian cuisine.
Events and traditions
Community life in Ponzano Veneto is expressed through parish festivals and local cultural initiatives, often linked also to promoting the heritage of the Venetian villas found across the territory. The industrial history tied to Villa Minelli also remains a recognised marker of identity well beyond the municipal boundaries.
How to get there and location
Ponzano Veneto lies immediately north of Treviso, well connected to the city by the provincial road network and not far from Treviso-Sant'Angelo airport. Its central position within the Marca Trevigiana makes it a convenient base for exploring both Treviso and the Prosecco hills.
Local life and economy
Ponzano Veneto's economy has a strong industrial and productive component, historically tied to the presence of the Benetton group, alongside a fabric of small and medium enterprises typical of the Marca Trevigiana. An agricultural component also persists, with farms working the land of the surrounding plain, in a balance between industrial vocation and rural landscape.
